  2. Bell Ringer Write a paragraph • Why did Christopher Columbus journey across the Atlantic? • Why was Christopher Columbus journey across the Atlantic a difficult journey? Remember people thought the world was flat; no telephones or ways to message for help; seasickness, unknown destinations, lack of fresh food, all men on ship, etc.

  3. The Ships • 3 ships: Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria • The first journey took five weeks and it is believed that land was sited on Oct. 12, 1492. • Columbus and his crew first landed in the Bahamas and explored Cuba before heading back to Spain. • This area became known as the “West Indies” because Columbus at first thought he was in the “East Indies.”

  4. First accounts • Columbus insisted to the royal court in Spain that he had reached Asia (it was Cuba) and an island off the coast of China (Hispaniola). • His descriptions were part fact and part fiction: Hispaniola is a miracle. Mountains and hills, plains and pastures, are both fertile and beautiful…the harbors are unbelievably good and there are many wide rivers of which the majority contain gold…There are many spices, and great mines of gold and other metals.

  5. His Legacy • Columbus always insisted he found Asian islands, not a new continent. • Explorer Amerigo Vespucci traveled to America between 1502-15o4 and documented to the world in his journals that it was a “New Continent”. It was named “America” after Amerigo. • When Columbus died in 1507 his body underwent excarnation- the flesh was removed so that only his bones remained. He was buried in Spain but his body was moved to Hispaniola in 1542.

  6. The Sea Voyage • They thought the water would boil and burn their ships or that sea monsters would attack. • Many shipmen died of diseases or starvation. • Between 1492 and 1502 Columbus made 4 voyages.

  7. Group Assignment to the Moon • Many people thought Columbus was “crazy” for trying to sail to an unknown land. Imagine that your grou(2 people) want to journey to the moon, to explore a new unknown planet. • Prepare a 1-2 minute presentation fir the class in which you will convince us that you are not “crazy” but rather “prepared” for the trip. • Name your rocket or space ship, list what you will bring and eat, explain your training, responsibilities, how you will breathe, What you hope to find, etc. • Be creative
