Christ Healing a Demonized Boy(Luke 9:37-43) Raphael (ca. 1520 AD)
I. Disputing Opponents Mark 9:14-18 1. Context: From glory above to a mess below 2. Question: What were they disputing? Identity of Christ Credibility of the disciples
“From this point on the Lord apparently ignored the scribes and dealt with the boy’s problem. This furnishes a good example for us… Minister to people. Proclaim the truth to people. By-pass the leaders, if necessary, to reach people. Do not concentrate on winning an argument at the risk of losing the people. Fanatics are always with us. Do not focus on them, but on the people they seek to sway.” Dr. Charles Ryrie
II. A Distraught Father (Luke 9:38-41) my only child epileptic (Matt. 17) mute spirit (Mark 9) seizes him and he cries out throws him down, foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid (Mark 9) He often falls into the fire and often into water (Matt. 17)
II. A Distraught Father This child represents all people. We are under the domain of darkness; under the authority of the prince of the power of the air, Satan. He crushes the freedom and dignity of the imago dei. And only the power and compassion of Christ can save us.
III. Deficient Disciples Luke 9:40-41 Notice the Lord’s strong response. If faith pleases Him, lack of faith must really disappoint Him.
III. Deficient Disciples Luke 9:40-41 Why couldn’t we drive it out? “Because of your little faith.” (Matt. 17:20) “This kind can only come out by prayer.” (Mk. 9)
Outstanding Prayer! “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” “Lord, Command what Thou will; and then give what Thou command.” Augustine
IV. A Delivering Christ Luke 9:41-42 “Bring him to me” Jesus rebuked the demon, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
Conclusion “All were astonished at the majesty of God.” “we were eyewitnesses of His majesty” (2 Pe 1:16) Luke wants us to see that what was visible to the chosen three on the mountain was visible to a greater number in Jesus’ ministry below.
Life Lessons 1. “Experience can teach, but it cannot empower.” Dr. Charles Ryrie 2. Power/enablement comes through prayer. No prayer, no power. • When faith is weak, look to the Lord. “I believe, Lord. Help my unbelief.”
