  10. ASX-4000 Series: Port Card Chart • See chart in notes page

  11. ASX-4000 Series: Netmod Carrier Card (NMC) • Purpose: Extends capacity of the port card slots in the ASX-4000 series switches with the inclusion of ASX/TNX netmods • The NMC hosts up to two netmods in a single port card slot • Each ASX-4000/M supports eight NMCs per chassis (16 netmods total) • 1+1 SONET APS/SDH MSP available for Series E OC-3c and OC-12c netmods • 1:1 electrical redundancy available for DS3 netmods NMC Insertion of netmod inside an NMC

  12. ASX-4000 Series: Power Supply Modules • Automatically load sharing and redundant • Failed unit hot-swappable • Four 12 amp AC or five 25 amp DC power supply modules used in ASX-4000 • Four 50 amp DC power supply modules used in ASX-4000M ASX-4000M DC Power Supply ASX-4000 AC Power Supply

  13. ASX-4000 Series: Fan Trays and Filter Tray Filter Tray Fans (not shown: another set of fans on top)

  14. ASX-4000: Cable Management • Cable channels protect and organize fibers and facilitate access to upper fan tray • Port card doors help protect network connections on port cards • Two versions • Deep (newer) • Shallow (older)

  15. ASX-4000 Series: Timing • Transformer Interface Module (TIM) • Physical connection area for external timing sources • Timing Control Module (TCM) • Verifies the timing reference and distributes a high quality clock • Daughtercard for the SCP • Switch Control Processor-Interface Module (SCP-IM) • SCP consists of the Switch Control Engine (SCE) and the SCP-IM • Provides the interface between the SCE and the rest of the ASX-4000/M • Provides connections to the TCM

  16. ASX-4000 Series: Timing Components ASX-4000/M Timing source TIM TCM Rest of the ASX-4000/M SCP-IM SCE SCP

  17. ASX-4000 Series: Housing the System • Mounting Rack • 19”/23” standard open or closed rack with ventilated sides/back;open front • Shelf must be used, not just flanges • Ventilation • Place unit 3” from other equipment • Enclosed racks need air movers • Fill or cover all front slots • Use approved blank port cards to fill empty slots to ensure proper air flow within the enclosure

  18. ASX-4000 Series: Safety Considerations • Do not overload the power circuits • Ground the equipment and yourself • There are no serviceable parts on the back of the system • Two people are required to lift chassis; use the bottom to support it

  19. ASX-4000 Series: Rack Mount • Use lowest rack position possible • Shelf assembly kit must be used • Mount rails to sides of rack • Mount shelf to rails • Carefully position chassis on shelf • Secure chassis to rack

  20. Summary • Listed the hardware features of the ASX-4000 series switch • Examined the SCPs, fabrics, port cards and netmods and understand their location in the ASX-4000 series switch • Explained the timing control system of the ASX-4000 series switch • Listed the installation techniques for the ASX-4000 series switch
