  1. Head Start 2008“Be Your Own Superhero”Student Session Module Two

  2. Purpose Welcome back SOSer’s, it is time to start module This module will take you through a simulation type activity of how to conduct a student session and provide information on the events of the day. So lets get started.

  3. Agenda • In this module you will be going over such topics as: - Superhero meet and greet - Student superhero session - Communicating with your fellow hero

  4. Superhero Meet and Greet In the morning what do you do? - The boardroom in the CAW center is orientation leader headquarters during Head Start. Check in is at 7:45am for orientation leaders. Meet with your team to discuss what each person will be doing during the student session, and than move to ambassador auditorium to mingle with the new superheros.

  5. Superhero Meet and Greet Other Jobs • In the morning as an OL you may be assigned as a floater where you may be assigned several different roles depending on the needs of the day • In the afternoon as an OL you may be asked to run the EDC or U-Crew booth as well as provide campus tours for superhero’s and their sidekicks

  6. Superhero Meet and Greet Head Start has gotten a facelift and the 2008 Head Start will not include a dance. This year the audience will be more involved by competing in cheer-offs against faculties, OL’s, parents etc..

  7. Give it a try…… Here are some of the cheers for you to practice: -When I say Windsor, you say Rocks Windsor!!!! ….. Rocks!!!! Windsor!!!! ….. Rocks!!!! • Strong Loud Lancer Proud!!!! • We say Lan you say Cer Lan!!!!….Cer!!!! Lan!!!!…Cer!!!!

  8. Student Superhero Session -After your group has completed their cheer the student superhero’s will than proceed to their assigned student session. - Conduct the session according to your checklist. Begin with an ice-breaker( outside if possible). Award prize ballots to the winning team in your session and to any strong participants.

  9. Student Superhero Session Here are some icebreakers to try with your group: 2 truths and a lie: The students will say two truths about themselves and one lie. The rest of the group must try to determine which one is the lie.

  10. Student Superhero Session Categories: Ask a group of students to organize themselves from smallest to largest; shortest to tallest; favourite colours alphabetically… This must all be done without saying a word.

  11. Student Superhero Session Pompadour Beach ball: Each student takes turns passing the beach ball around. When a student catches it, they must answer the question their right thumb lands on.

  12. Student Superhero Session Chatter bots: -Ask participants to pair up with a buddy and introduce themselves -Have participants select one of two categories – Autobots or Deceptacons. (The pair has to consist of one or the other. They both can’t choose the same thing). -Have all Autobots form a circle with their backs toward the center of the circle. -Have all Deceptacons face their partners in a larger circle outside the Autobots -OL’s will call out topics for the transformers to discuss -After 30 seconds an OL will say “ Transform” and each transformer will rotate once to the right to start a new discussion with another participant -Continue this until each person has had a chance to meet each other

  13. Student Superhero Session Now that your icebreakers are complete it is time for the power point presentation. This year there is only one student session to be presented. Make sure you review the PowerPoint presentation. You will find these slides in your manual

  14. Student Superhero Session Recommendations before you start! - Introduce yourselves! (Name, Program etc.) - Make sure to encourage students to write questions down during the presentation. There will be a chance to ask them at the end. • Often times the questions they need answered will be addressed on a later slide • This allows you to maintain control of the time factor and will allow more discussion at the end

  15. Student Superhero Session During the presentation • Try not to read off the power point screen. • Makes you appear unprepared • To avoid this, read the slides before hand • Remember to divide the slides up before you begin • Talk to your group members and decide how the presentation will run (you will have time for this when you meet in the morning, but make sure you remember and follow it!) • Do not talk over your group members. You need to be a united front and show respect for one another

  16. Student Superhero Session These new superhero’s can be a bit intimidating so practice presenting the following slide…

  17. BUILD • One-week program • Students with disabilities are involved in peer mentoring, academic skills training, and one-on-one advising. • Lots of fun social events too! • Must possess documentation confirming a diagnosis of a learning disability. • Register online: www.uwindsor.ca/sds

  18. Student Superhero Session How was that?? Here try this one. Try to present it in and fun creative way!!

  19. Student Development & Support • Aboriginal Education Centre (Turtle Island) • Academic Writing Centre • Help with essay writing • Centre for Career Education • Resume clinics • Educational Development Centre • LEADS, STEPS, SOS • International Student Centre • Can apply to go on exchange 2nd year and later • Student Counseling

  20. Student Superhero Session How was that?? What type of methods did you use to spice up the slides??

  21. Student Superhero Session Some things you can do to spice up your presentation are: • Insert personal experience when talking about a slide. • Students often relate more to your experiences rather then dry reading off the slide • Be passionate about what you are talking about • If you are excited that will ripple down and make them excited.

  22. Student Superhero Session • Clickers Students will have the chance to experience how clickers are used by answering questions throughout the presentation. Clickers will be available to you in your Dillon Hall presentation room.  It is the OL’s responsibility to return ALL of the borrowed clickers.  Someone will pick them up from each student session before you leave for Advising or the Leader Meeting room.

  23. Student Superhero Session After Presenting • Make sure to have them fill out the evaluations • NOTE: There are two evaluations to fill out • General Evaluation & Student Evaluation • Have students fill out Alumni forms and hand them back into you • Explain what will be happening the rest of the day • Direct them to their advising locations

  24. Communicating With Your Fellow Hero • Now that you have finished the power point it is time to invite questions. • After inviting questions, don’t rush ahead if no one asks a question • Allow the students to gather their thoughts • When answering the question direct your remarks to the entire group

  25. Communicating With Your Fellow Hero When Answering Questions • Keep focused • Don’t loose track and continue to go off on a tangent • Keep responses 10-40 seconds, too short may appear abrupt, longer answers appear too elaborate • You may receive off the wall questions…don’t let them sidetrack you. Answer them to the best of your ability • Do not make the student feel stupid • If you don’t know ask another OL

  26. Communicating With Your Fellow Hero I HAVE A QUESTION???? A student asks a question in the middle of the presentation…How would you handle this???

  27. Communicating With Your Fellow Hero Answer: • If the question is about the topic • Keep your answer clear and concise • If the question is off topic • “Great question” we will be speaking about this later on in the presentation (if you know it is) or “Great question” we will come back to it later on so your question can be better answered

  28. Communicating With Your Fellow Hero Effective Body Language WHILE PRESENTING BE AWARE OF YOUR: • Eye contact • Facial expressions • Gestures • Posture & body orientation • Proximity • Vary your voice

  29. Communicating With Your Fellow Hero • Pay attention to the message you send with your body language • Remember to move around, spread out in front of the room. • Don’t all be standing behind the podium. • Spreading out creates a more personable space that encourages interaction

  30. Communicating With Your Fellow Hero If asked a question about residence or the meal plan: Explain that you are unable to answer Meal Plan and Residence questions. There is a separate session available that will tour and address all questions and concerns

  31. Test Time!!!!! Alright it’s test time!!! Good Luck and Have Fun!!
