ICC PROFILE: The description of a colour space; a standard set of figures used to characterize colour, “vendor neutral” • ICC = Int’l Colour Consortium (vendors such as Adobe, Mac, Microsoft, etc)
ICC Profile Types • Device Dependent: describes one particular device; a system where the colour of a file is dependent on the final output device - Input profile: describes cameras and scanners in a one-way profile conversion - Output Profile: describes monitors and printers in a one-way profile conversion
ICC Profile Types • Device independent: describes an RGB working space • Standards: Adobe RGB: printing • sRGB: web space
CMM: Colour Matching Method or the “engine” that transforms a file from one colour space or ICC profile to another; software that interprets information from device profile and carries out instructions on how the colour gamut of each device should be treated • Common CMMs are Apple ColourSync, Microsoft ICM, Agfa CMM
Gamut = the range of colours that can be displayed or printed by an imaging system • Out of Gamut = colour on monitor will not be reproducible • Gamma = brightness of monitor
