Houses: How big was the average medieval home? • Medieval houses were different than roman houses. • Most people lived in villages. • The average house was one to two stories high. • The houses usually had two rooms. • One of the rooms was the main/living room and the other was a kitchen with a stone oven. • Medieval houses usually only had one small window so they would be dark and smoky.
Castles: How long did it take to build a castle? • Landscape was key in the protection of early castles. • Bigger castles took up to twenty years to complete. • Average sized castles took seven to twelve years.
Materials: What materials were used to build shelters? • Most houses had wooden supports. • The supports had spaces consisting of wattle and daub. • The lumber was usually oak. • Wattle consisted of willow or oak branches woven together to make a mesh. • Daub made the wattle waterproof. • Daub was a mixture of horsehair, clay, and the poo of animals near by. • The floors were dirt with reed mats.
Pay: What was the average pay of a medieval architect? • Some architects were vassals. • They were offered protection for their work. • They were also offered land for their work. • They were considered upper-middle class.
Gothic Architecture: What is gothic architecture? • Gothic architecture developed in France. • It spread though out Europe between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. • It was characterized with vertical piers and counter balancing buttresses. • It developed from the previous architectural style Romanesque.
Styles: What styles of architecture were used to build houses, castles ect.? • Roman architecture 753 BC to 633 AD • Merovingian 400s to 700s France and Germany • Anglo-Saxon 450s to 1066 England and Wales • Byzantine 527 to 1520 Byzantine Empire • Moorish 700s to 1492 Western Europe • Pre-Romanesque 700 to 1000 Western Europe • Carolingian 780s to 800 France and Germany • Ottonian 950s 1050s Germany • Russian 989 to 1700s • Romanesque 1000 to 1300 Europe • Norman 1074 to 1250 • Gothic 1300? • And Many more

Architects: Who were some famous medieval architects? • Bertolino Bragerio was an Italian architect. • Ulrich Ensinger built Strasbourg Cathedral. • Richard Cementarious built Drum Castle. • Eduardo Paniagua was a Spanish architect.
Landscape: What type of landscape was easiest to build on? • Landscape was key in the protection of early castles. • Castles were built accordingly to nearby supplies, such as wood if it was by a forest or stone if it was by a rock quarry. • Most castle were built on hill sides.
Churches and cathedrals: How long did it take to build a cathedral? • Cathedrals were home to the bishop’s throne. • Cathedrals are like churches but usually are about two to ten times bigger. • Events that took place in cathedrals were; mass, baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals, and the ordainment of priests and other bishops. • Some Cathedrals took up to 80 years to complete building!
