  3. What is SOCRATES/ERASMUS? The SOCRATES II programme supports European cooperation in eight areas, from school to higher education, from new technologies to adult learners.

  4. What is Socrates/Eramus? The higher education section of SOCRATES II ("ERASMUS") continues the original European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students (the "ERASMUS programme"), established in 1987. It is named after the philosopher, theologian and humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam (1465-1536)

  5. Eramus Describing himself as a citizen of the world, he lived and worked in several parts of Europe, in quest of knowledge, experience and insights which only first-hand contacts with other countries could bring. SOCRATES/ERASMUS scheme enables today’s students to learn from trans-national mobility in the same way as Erasmus did.

Participating countries Open to participation by 30 countries: The 15 Member States of the European Union The 3 EEA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway The 12 Associated countries The Czech Republic, Hungary, the Slovak Republic, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta , Bulgaria and Romania

  7. Key Features In the earlier phases, ‘Physical mobility', mainly of students, constituted the main thrust of ERASMUS. More emphasis is now placed on Teaching staff exchanges, Pan-European Thematic Networks and Transnational curriculum development

  8. Financial support The EU budget of SOCRATES/ERASMUS for 2000-2006 amounts to around € 950 M (€ 750 M for students grants). Additional funds are provided in each Country by public authorities, by universities themselves and by other organisations

  9. How do students benefit? ERASMUS gives students an opportunity to get to know a different culture, study at a foreign university, meet new friends, learn another language, all at the same time.

  10. How do students benefit? The placements are for a period between 3 and 12 months. Students also receive a study grant. Very importantly, no fees are payable to the host university.

  11. How do students benefit? The students receive full recognition for their study period abroad. Credits accumulated abroad are counted towards the requirements of the home university.

  12. Benefits for Teaching Staff Activities include: Teaching periods abroad (1 to 8 weeks) at partner universities Participating in the development of study programmes with European partners Intensive Programmes Joining or creating a Thematic Network.

  13. SOCRATES contracts Apart from funds for student and staff mobility, SOCRATES offers financial support to universities as incentive to add a European perspective to their programmes. This is carried out through the "SOCRATES/ERASMUS Institutional Contract".

  16. New SOCRATES Initiative A new programme is being launched: ERASMUS MUNDUS Enlarges ERASMUS to the whole world Objective is to attract high quality students from countries outside the EU to register for Joint Masters Degrees

  18. Example 2 Introductory lectures on Structural Eurocodes. Participating universities are: UK - City University London DE - Fachhochschule Gießen FIN - Tampere Polytechnic University DK - (Aarhus Technikum Hojskolen)

  19. Example 2 Same short course is delivered in each university in turn. The lectures, delivered over a single day, are shared between teachers from the three (or four) participating universities.

  21. Example 2 ERASMUS mobility funds are used to support staff travel. Bilateral agreements have been signed between all participating universities. Funding could also have been obtained through the Intensive Programmes option.
