The Bourbons • Trying to completely change old political and economic structures in Spain • How did this effect the Americas? • Further centralization of colonial administration • Try to reduce smuggling and “reconquer” the colonies economically by improving exclusive economic ties
Major changes • New viceroyalties • 1739: Viceroyalty of New Granada (Northern Andean region) • 1776: Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata • Charles III • Trading monopoly of Cadiz gradually eliminated • 1778: Decree of free trade
Stimulus to economic activity! • Most important impact of Bourbon reform • Growing European demand • Increase in population • Increase in agricultural production • Increased concentration of landownership • Revival of silver mining • Leads to… • Fortification of ports • Creation of colonial military
Downside… • Decline in colonial manufacturing (limited) • Early labor struggles in 1770s and 1780s • Resentments/class divide continues • Creoles vs. Peninsulars (native born vs. Spain born whites) • Multitude did not get benefits of Bourbon reforms
Major discontent CAUSES: • Repartimiento de mercancias—forced buying of goods from local authority for high prices • Higher taxes, tightened collection of tribute
TupacAmaru II • Was originally Jose Gabriel Condorcanqui • Mestizo • Tried to help out legally first • Revolt 1780-1781 • Purpose: to establish an independent Peruvian state • “Anticolonial, national revolution” • Issues: • Indian peasantry wanted to return to old ways/religion • Tactical errors, poor communication
