MTQs College Prep 2-8-13
MTQ Teams • Groups of 5 at the most • First team to get to 14 correct wins a prize • The scores will be carried over to the next Friday • ? Card VS. non-? cards
College Essays • I have graded your college essays • However, I decided against giving them back to you today. • I know many of you in this class are ambitious individuals and would try to fix them over the weekend. That would be detrimental. • I want to conference with each and every one of you BEFORE you start editing and revising. • I believe that the one-on-one conferences are an integral part of the system • DON’T FREAK OUT!!!!! You will have plenty of time to edit and revise.
Monday • I will pass back your college essays. • You will have some time to look over my comments and generate questions for me • We will do conferences. • During these conferences we will: • Go over any questions you have • I will explain most everything I wrote • Discuss an individualized plan to improve your writing • As we kick up gears, you will be writing much more often and for a variety of purposes…I believe that each writer has different strengths and weaknesses. We need to figure out what WE (you and I) need to focus on at this juncture. This focus will change throughout the semester.
Missing College Essays • There are a few people whose essays I do not have…. • Did I misplace them or did you not turn them in?
READ!!!! • Read “Harrison Bergeron” • Annotate for characterization and theme • Use this information to come up with the argument Vonnegut is making! • Think about HOW he makes the argument • 1) What kind of characterization method does he use to make his argument • 2) What type of argument (Ethos, Pathos, Logos) does he use • 3) Is it effective?
Painting with our brush strokes • Rewrite a descriptive paragraph from “Harrison Bergeron” and insert our first 2 brush strokes (participles and absolutes). • You must use 1 of each (participle, participial phrase, absolute and absolute phrase)… • Try to combine! If you are particularly ambitious
Theme and argument • On the same paper, give me the theme of “Harrison Bergeron” • Main idea + author’s opinion = theme • What argument is Vonnegut making? • EVIDENCE from the text (at least three pieces)-connect to ethos, pathos, logos
Homework • Character response sheet on Harrison • The sheet itself is a template…Do NOT write on the sheet…. • This must be done on a separate sheet of paper. • Short story prewrite sheet
