Killing Lust with the Gospel • Colossians 3:5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. • 1 Corinthians 6:9-7:5
Cultural Sexual Ethic • Three Questions: • Is sex desirable? • Is sex consensual? • Is sex safe? • Assumption: sex is just an appetite, like eating.
Biblical Sexual Ethic • Sex is a gift to be used to celebrate, renew, and strengthen a covenant. • Adultery – Sex outside a covenant. • Sexual Immorality – Sex without a covenant. • Lust – strong desire for sex regardless of any covenant.
Bible is not Sexual Repressed • Genesis 2:24 • Proverbs 5:18-19 • Song of Solomon
Cultural Sexual Ethic • Commodity – Sex is what you want. • Currency – Sex will get you what you want. • “We aren’t married but we are committed.” • How do you define commitment? • Sex minus a covenant makes it a tryout.
Sex without a covenant is destructive. • 1 Corinthians 6:16-17 • Matthew 5:27-30
Gospel Hope – Ephesians 5 • Jesus Justifies his Bride • Jesus knew his bride and entered into a covenant with her anyway. • He knows your sexual brokenness and loves you anyway!
Gospel Hope – Ephesians 5 • Jesus Sanctifies his Bride • Jesus washes his bride to make her pure and radiant • He sees you as he will make you – pure and radiant.
Gospel Faith– Our Response • John 8 • Make Jesus the lover of your soul. • Leave sexual immorality behind. • Single: sex does not complete you, Jesus does (Paul 1 Cor. 7:8-9) • Single (but burning): Let Jesus prepare you for a covenant. • Married: use sex to strengthen and renew your covenant (1 Cor. 7)
