Background: The United Nations (UN) Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children • The Commission was set up in response to the call in the UN Secretary-General’s Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health • For increasing access to and appropriate use of medicines, medical devices and health supplies • To effectively address leading avoidable causes of death during pregnancy, childbirth and childhood • The Commission identified 13 essential commodities that could save the lives of millions of women and children • Made 10 recommendations for how to get these commodities to those who need them most. Among the 49 Every Woman Every Child initiative countries

  3. The Commission’s recommendations support clear objectives for under-utilized life-saving commodities across the RMNCH Continuum of care Country Plans to increase access to commodities and services and Accelerate achievement of MDGs 4 & 5

  4. First Eight Countries Pathfinder countries: • Malawi • DRC • Nigeria • Uganda • Senegal • Ethiopia • Siera leone • Tanzania

Focus areas: Expected Results • Recommendation 5: Regulatory Efficiency: • Output MOHSW: Registration of required life-saving commodities from local and international manufacturers fast tracked • Output MOHz: Reproductive Maternal and Child Health (RMNCH) life saving commodities registered • Recommendation 6: Supply and awareness: • Output: Adequate quantities of RMNCH life saving commodities procured with improved forecasting and Quantification • Output: Reduced stock outs by strengthening Logistics Management Information System including inventory and stock management • Output: Strengthened distribution channels and storage for oxytocin based on evidence

Focus areas: Expected Results • Recommendation 6: Supply and awareness • Output (Zanzibar): Funds for procuring RMNCH commodities increased and sustained. • Output(Zanzibar): Adequate quantities of RMNCH LSC procured with improved forecasting and quantification systems • Recommendation 7: Demand and awareness for product & service utilization by 2014 • Output Evidence generated to guide demand creation and service utilization interventions • Output : Increased availability and utilization of life saving commodities through advocacy and BCC interventions
