Beginnings… • The environment • Creating digital content since 2004 • Storage on servers • Backups on CDs and DVDs • Creation of new team
Goals… • Start the move toward becoming a “Trusted Repository” under ISO 16363 • Standardize processing using the OAIS model • Standardize a coherent file system that is consistent with Special Collections and University Archives collection arrangement • Secure our content using three on and off site storage areas • Multiple backup resources
Digital Content • Digitized content (audio, video, images, documents) • Born digital content (audio, video, images, documents and disk images) • Research Data • Sources of content
Storage • Content is spread across 4 different servers • One large file directory system for archival original files • Omekastorage (access files) • Archivematicastorage (AWS-S3) • Other cloud storage (Google Drive)
Legacy Data • Organization across servers • Clean up of duplicate and non archival material • Clean and standardize metadata • Why?
Archivematica • Choosing tools • OAIS model • Consolidated processing (a systematic approach) • METS file with PREMIS and DC • Direct storage and access pipelines • Additional storage (10 years from now?) • Access options • Local installation working with Library Systems Admin
Digital Preservation Policy • Who we are • What we do • Why we do it • How we do it (standards: LOC, NDSA, ISO) • Customer friendly
Our Partners • Library • University • Community • Region • State (State Archives, UNC Institutional Partnerships)
Library Partners • Systems Administrator • Repository administration and maintenance • Web Services • Online presence • Technology Team • Equipment
University Partners • University IT • Server storage • Cloud storage • Data backup • Chief Information Security Officer • Data security
Community Partners • Public library • Digital Watauga • Historical societies and other local history groups • Blowing Rock Historical Society • Lincoln Heights Recreation Corporation • Mountain Home Memories: Digital Library of Southern Appalachia • How we work with them • Education about preserving digital content • Managing some of the content ourselves
Digital Scholarship & Initiatives (DSI): Challenges • Challenges: • Funding and resources • Education - lack of understanding of basic technology • Trust – ownership and management of digital content • Leadership changes
Do Something! • The worst thing you can do is nothing. • What are similar institutions doing? • Connect with colleagues. • Ask us! We are here to help.
