  5. Socialization: • The process of learning interpersonal and communication skills that are in conformity with the values of one's society.

  6. Agents of Socialization: • The people, groups, agencies, and institutions that help shape our ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviour.

  7. Institutions: • Specific representatives of Agents of Socialization… • (Education – SHS, Religion – Knox United, Government – Revenue Canada, Peers – Person sitting beside you, Family – Aunite Anne, Media – Facebook, CBC, CNN…)

  8. Agents of Socialization • Mass Media • Family • Peer groups • Religion • Government • Educational Institutions

  9. Notes on the Agents • All will influence you • Their influence will change in importance over time • All will have different influcenes on different people at different times • They are all important • They are all equally important • BUT – They are not equally important all of the time

  10. Reflection - Formative • Rank each of the agents of civilization from one to six in order of their importance in your life. • How do each one of these influence your personal ideas, thoughts, beliefs and behaviour?

  11. Something to Think About: • Does this mean there are different agents of socialization in different places? What if those places are in the same society? Would the rules have to be different for people who have shown they cannot follow the rules?
