Determine soil composition • Get sample of soil from surface down 8 to 12". • Fill a jar half way with this broken up soil. • Fill with water. • Shake 3 minutes then leave undisturbed. • Mark what settles after 30 seconds, below this is sand. • Make a second mark after 3 min, this area is silt. • Remaining area to halfway mark is clay. from Colorado State University
