Aim of this evening • To hear from professionals what Universities are looking for. • To understand the timescales involved in the UCAS application process. • To find out about the changes to the financial arrangements for students going into Higher Education. • To have a chance to ask questions
Is HE for me? • Everyone capable of level 3 study is able to access HE • Compact schemes, SHU, Sheffield University. • Leeds access scheme • Criteria – first generation, under represented ethnic group, special needs.
The process of UCAS application at Silverdale. • Booklet issued March (Apply 2011) • Independence Day on Monday 11th July H.E. • Early applicants – visits to Oxford/Cambridge July. • Registered onto UCAS system in June/July PSHE. • Longlisting Monday 18th July • Personal statement drafts by end of summer term. • Subject references
Autumn Term • Make appointments with Tutors. • Form Tutor - Key role -Whole process done on line. • Head of sixth checks forms. All early applications sent by 15th October. • Applications are dealt with on a push system. • All applications must be processed by 15th December –internal deadline – UCAS deadline 15th January.
Spring Term • Students wait for offers. • Some students will be asked for interviews. • When made offers must decide on • one as CF (Confirmed First choice) and • one as CI (Confirmed Insurance) • By date specified – updates from UCAS enable monitoring.
No Offers / Anomalies • UCAS extra. • UCAS Adjust • Clearing – after results. • Deferred entry – prefer students to apply this year. • Can decline all offers, no compulsion to take up places. • No idea? – Very late entries – June 30th
What we will do. • Provide individual guidance and support. • Direct access to Connexions and other agencies. • Write high quality open references. • Finance talk in assembly and application packs given out at PSHE sessions. • A team on hand to provide support post results.
What Parents can do to help • Monitor the process at home. • Encourage students to meet the deadlines. • Talk through options and encourage students to research fully.(2 open days) • Consult with the school as necessary on any areas of concern e.g. visits, final offer decisions, etc.
Finally, what can the students do? • Take responsibility for the process. • Meet deadlines. • Talk to their Tutors and Sixth form staff. • Communicate with their parents and keep them up to date. • Manage their time well. • This is the opportunity of a life time, get excited!
