Arabic Baptist Church Boston The Rich Man and Lazarusالغنى ولعازرLuke 16: 16 - 32 August 12, 2018
Luke 16: 19 -23 • There was a certain rich man who was customarily clothed in purple and fine linen and making merry in luxury every day. • And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores • and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. But even the dogs came and licked his sores. • And it happened that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich one also died and was buried. • And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luke 16: 24 -27 • And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. • But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things. But now he is comforted and you are tormented. • And besides all this, there is a great chasm fixed between you and us; so that they desiring to pass from here to you cannot, nor can they pass over to us from there. • And he said, I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house,
Luke 16: 28 -31 • Luk 16:28 for I have five brothers, so that he may testify to them, lest they also come into this place of torment. • Luk 16:29 Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the Prophets, let them hear them. • Luk 16:30 And he said, No, father Abraham, but if one should go to them from the dead, they would repent. • Luk 16:31 And he said to him, If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded, even though one rose from the dead.

The Rich Man and Lazarus • Introduction • The Rich Man • Lazarus • The Contrast in Death • The Contrast in Eternity • In Eternity the conscious is still active • Conclusion
Introduction • The greedy Pharisees • The results of abuse of wealth and contempt of the poor • You cannot serve God and money • Outward appearance does not reflect the true internal character • God’s judgement is just • Our daily life and customs result in either a godly character or an evil character which determines your eternal destiny • The rich man did not get to hell because of his riches • The poor man did not get to heaven because of his poverty • Our rejection of Jesus’ salvation causes the dark destiny in hell
1. The Rich Man • He wet to hades because of his failure to recognize that he is entrusted for God’s money and resources • He did not utilize God’s riches to help his fellow men, he was selfish and bad steward • Are you a faithful steward?
2. Lazarus • His name means, God is helper • The only person that had a real name in all the parables of Jesus • He had no helpers except God • He was not better than the rich man because of his poverty, or sickness or his other life needs
3. The Rich Man and Lazarus (Contrast in Death) • Was Lazarus buried? • The rich man died like the rest of humans • The rich man had a state funeral • The rich man’s soul was lonely after his death • He expected to go to paradise but he found himself in hades • The Rich Man left all his money on earth
4. Contrast in Eternity • Hades is split into two spheres (places) hades & paradise with a gulf in between • Hades is the place where the souls of the sinners go after death to be tormented in fire • Paradise is the place where the souls of the believers go after death to be blessed and comforted • There is a chasm (gulf) fixed between hades and paradise • No one for hades can go to paradise and vise versa • After the resurrection of Christ, He descended into hades and carried captivity captives (i.e. he took the souls of the believers who died on the hope of resurrection into the Father’s house with Him)
5. In Eternity the conscious is still active • The Rich man kept his conscious, character, feelings, seeing things, speaking and knowledge in hades • His conscious tormented him beside the fire and isolation • The rich man became an evangelist in hades • Lazarus was being comforted while the rich man was being tormented • Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, • لأَنَّ غَضَبَ اللهِ مُعْلَنٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ عَلَى جَمِيعِ فُجُورِ النَّاسِ وَإِثْمِهِمِ الَّذِينَ يَحْجِزُونَ الْحَقَّ بِالإِثْمِ.
Conclusion • Man cannot serve two masters • The choice made on earth determines the the life to come • In the future personality continues, feelings, knowing, seeing, reasoning and remembering • These personality attributes causes the torment of the sinners and in the case of the righteous causes their bless • Heaven and hell are realities • Our eternal destiny depends not upon wealth or poverty but upon our relationship with Jesus Christ who came as Moses and the prophets prophesied as the savior of the world
