Getting ready to backpack • September 27: Backpack cooking • Menu planning and how to take your fav recipe and make it backpack light • Using a backpack stove • Cooking in twos – pick your food buddy now! • October 11: Packing your pack • Weighty matters: lighter is better • Don’t be a dork, leave the kitchen sink at home
Wet Stream Crossings Yes, we’re going to cross a stream. Many times. A lot. So your feet are going to get wet. It’s part of the fun of backpacking, and with a little planning…it’s no problem at all.
You need: two pairs of shoes During the day: protective, supportive shoes Evening at the campsite: Lightweight shoes to protect your tooties
Socks Matter a Lot!!! Wool socks will keep your feet warm all day long, even when your shoes are soaked! Wool socks are even great with lightweight sandals or crocs when you’re in camp in the evening. Remember: Cotton socks suck. Don’t bring them.
And about that cotton… No jeans No Jeans SERIOUSLY…NO JEANS!!! They get heavy when wet and make your life miserable when you’re hiking. Think polyester/nylon blends – and think layering!
Size matters (and so does weight) Backpacking mantra: Take only what you need, and make it as small as possible. Airy, almost weightless headlamp flashlight. Ridiculously mondo large flashlight. Which one would you want to carry in your backpack?
Plan for the tripOctober 15 • Do your homework on Friday night. Or go on a date. Or both. • Leave 6:00 a.m. sharp Saturday morning • Get to trailhead at 10:00 a.m. • Hike, explore, play and enjoy (3.7 miles) • Overnight at Huntfish Falls • Hike, explore, play and enjoy (2.4 miles) • Leave trailhead by 2:00 p.m. • Back to Durham by 6:00 p.m. in time for dinner!
