Cerium Evan 7.4
Basic Information • Name: Cerium • Symbol: ‘Ce’ • Atomic Number: 58 • Melting Point: 795.0 °C (1068.15 K, 1463.0 °F) • Boiling Point: 3257.0 °C (3530.15 K, 5894.6 °F) • Is it Metal: Yes, it is an iron-grey ‘lustrous’ metal.
The Discoveries of Cerium • Date of Discovery: Cerium as named for the ‘asteroid Ceres’ which was discovered in 1801, in 1803 the element was discovered, and in 1875 people prepared the metal. • People who discovered it: • 1803: Klaproth & Berzelius • 1875: Hillebrand & Norton (who prepared the metal)
The Element • Cerium is an iron-grey ‘ish’ metal. • It is capable of being shaped and formed. • It slowly ‘decomposes’ in water, but very rapid in hot water. • It may produce/ignite a spark when scratched with a knife.

Dangers of Cerium • Cerium ‘compounds’ are rarely encountered by human/ most people, because cerium is most likely used to present fire and explosion hazard. • It doesn’t cause much pollution but it can make fire that can be dangerous to the environment, especially when using kids are playing with matches that uses cerium it can be very dangerous.
Uses of Cerium • Used in the manufacture e of ‘pyrophoric’ alloys for cigarette lighters. • Can be also use as ceric sulphate, for quantitative analysis. • Also can be used for glass polishing, incandescent gas mantles, Petroleum refining, and Arc lighting
Interesting Facts • It is named after the asteroid Ceres • It only exists in four allotropic states • Cerium known as an element in the ‘Lanthanide’ series as one of the "Rare Earth Elements"
Helpful Information • Number of Protons/Electrons in Cerium : 58 • Number of Neutrons in Cerium : 82 • Crystal Structure: Cubic • Density @ 293 K: 6.773 g/cm3 • Color of Cerium : gray
