SECONDARY SCHOOL SURVEY SURINAME • November – December 2004 • Second and fourth grade junior secondary schools (13-19 years) • Second/final year at senior high school • Sample of schools and classes drawn according to the sampling method proposed by CICAD • 3,569 students completed questionnaire - 2,223 from the second grade - 1,346 from the fourth grade

SECONDARY SCHOOL SURVEY SURINAME • Cigarettes • One month prevalence: 10% • 79% smoked up to 5 cigarettes in the last 30 days • 2nd grade (84%) scores > 4th grade (72%) • Average 10.9% smoked more than 20 cigarettes • over the last month (16.9% for the 4th grade) • 2nd grade:9.5% and 4th grade:10.5% • Age group 15 – 16 years reported highest usage for all 3 occasions of prevalence (32%) • Mean age first cigarette 13.3 years, both for males and females

Alcohol • Life-time prevalence: 74.3% • One-year prevalence: 51% • 2nd grade: 68% and 4th grade: 73% • One-month prevalence: 48% • 81.5% used 1 – 5 alcoholic beverages No significant difference between 2nd graders (82.7%) and 4th graders (79.7%) • 5% have taken more than 11 drinks in the past month • Mean age first use alcoholic drinks 13.3 year

Stimulants • 22 students (0,61%) reported stimulant usage • 7 of 9 students in the 2nd grade (78%) and 9 of 13 students 4th grade (69%) continued using • stimulant after life time usage • 16 out of 22 students took stimulants for 1 – 7 days in the last 30 days • Mean age first use 13.8 year (median age 14 years; mode 15 years) • 1 out of 12 used stimulants at age 12 years • No significant differences were reported between 2nd and 4th grade • 1 out of 2 students continued using stimulants after their first use

Marihuana • Lifetime prevalence • 4.2% of 2nd grade and 4.6% of 4th grade • One-year prevalence • 2% of 2nd grade and 3.2% of 4th grade • No significant difference between the one-year and one month prevalence • Mean age for first use 14.9 year • 1 of 15 lifetime users smoked when 10 years old • Threshold for 2nd graders was lower (median 15 yrs; mode 15 yrs) than it was when the 4th graders were of their age (median 16 yrs; mode 16 yrs)

Hashish • (This drug has been increasingly confiscated since last year in Suriname) • From the study: • Lifetime prevalence: 1.1% • One-year prevalence: 0.80% and 1% respectively • Mean age first used hashish 15.3 years • (median 15 years; mode 15 years) • 1 out of 8 students used hashish at age 15

Heroin • Seven (7) students (0,19%) reported last year usage of heroin • Two students reported heroin usage on a daily basis • 3 out of 7 used heroin occasionally during the last 12 months • Mean age of first use 14.75 years • (median age 14 years; mode 10 years) • No significant difference between the students in the 2nd and 4th grade 8

Ecstasy • 16 students (0,45%) reported lifetime ecstasy usage • No significant difference between one year and one month prevalence between 2nd and 4th grade • Of the students who used XTC over the past year, 4 continued to use it over the past 30 days, and 1 reported using it daily • Prevalence was highest in age group 19 and older • 1 out of the 3 students continued to use XTC after their first use • The students who have used XTC had behavioral or discipline problems and academic difficulties several times 8

SECONDARY SCHOOL SURVEY SURINAME • Prevention (Any Drug) • Having information does not influence decision to ever use drugs • One-month prevalence: those who are well informed score lowest in their use of drugs • Lowest one month prevalence is seen with the students whose main sources of information are parents, relatives and professionals • The prevalence is highest for those who rely on their personal experience • There is a positive relationship between the access to drugs and the lifetime, one-year and one-month prevalence of abuse of any illegal drug 8

SECONDARY SCHOOL SURVEY SURINAME • Information • Around 50% of the students, in both the 2nd and the 4th grade, are well informed about the consequences of drugs • More than half of the students have not taken any drug prevention course • Those who had taken drug prevention courses, found it useful or very useful (70%) • About 10% say these courses were not useful to them (both among 2nd and 4th grade students) • For two thirds of the students these courses did not change their attitude about drugs 8
