1917: Lenin and the Bolsheviks take control • 1917: Secret police, known as the Cheka founded • 1918-1920: Civil War between the Bolsheviks and other groups • 1918-1922: Red Terror carried out in which those opposed to Lenin’s policies were arrested and executed by the Secret Police known as the Cheka • 1924: Lenin dies and Stalin seizes power • 1928: Collectivization of agriculture begins; numerous relatively prosperous peasants, or Kulaks, killed; millions of peasant households eliminated and their property confiscated. • 1936-1938: Announcement of the discovery of a plot against Stalin’s regime headed by Leon Trotsky ushers in a large-scale purge in which thousands of alleged dissidents in the armed forces, the Communist Party and the government were sentenced to death or long imprisonment.
