ROCK OF AGES By: Samuel Saavedra
Introduction • In today’s assignment, the tech proficiency class had to answer a series of surveys that would be used to be later analyzed. My survey involved the topic on rock/metal music; the title was called rock of ages. I’ve split each question into three formats; ranking, multiple choice and text. Other questions may involve a simple “yes” or “no” and choice of instrument. • Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in 1950s America and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in 1940s' and 1950s' rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources.
Q1: What rock bands do you admire? In the first question I ask what band each person would prefer over the other. The choices were the bands: Kiss, Poison, Motley Crue, Metallica, Slipknot and other. I believe that the majority of the people that answered other just said it, because they don’t like rock at all. If I were to choose who triumphed in this question I would have to say that Slipknot won the most votes.
Q2:How long have you been a rocker? According to this question, I asked how long has anyone been a rocker. Most of these people answered mostly their whole lives. The people that have chosen “other” may have answered that to tell me that they DO NOT like rock/metal music. I would answer three years, because I started to become a rocker when I was in middle school.
Q3: How would you rank the following bands? The bands that are being seen above are part of the ranking question. As it is shown, it would seem that the band, Pantera, out ranked the competition. Also judging by the organization, the top three bands are all metal bands. This comes to show that almost the majority of the responses come from people that prefer metal music than rock.
. Q4: If you had a chance to meet any rock band of your choice who would it be? The next question is in the category of text. As shown in the bullets above, most of the people who answered this question showed a sense of hating and humor. Many answered honestly and told the bands they would like to hear. I believe that the reason for the answers expressed how they do dislike rock/metal. I believe that the most humorous of the answers was the one that they would like to hear my band play.
Q:5 Have you ever been to a rock concert? This particular question tells me some of the truth about these students. The ones that answered “yes” showed me that the actually attended a concert. The people that answered other wise may not had went to those concerts because of their money problems or they just don’t like those types of things.
Q6: If you were to learn to play and instrument and join a band, what would you learn? Now this question is the type of question that makes me think, “why doesn’t this surprise me”. I could see that the majority of the whole class chose to play guitar than any other instrument. It dose not surprise me that The bass won last place, because it is the least appreciated instrument known to all rocker/metal history.
Q7: If you haven’t been answered my questions and don’t like metal/rock, what music do you prefer? This next question proves my assumptions to be valid. The question itself is all I needed to See if the class was honest in their answers. I believe that the majority of the class never even liked rock in the first place. It is obvious that we are in an age when everyone prefers music that sound as if the computer created it. I guess that no one will like this music, I guess this generation must show the next about this music. THE ROCKER/METALHEAD LEGACY MUST LIVE ON!!!!
