What is E Waste? • E-waste is short for electronic waste • It can be or comes from an electronic that has been running on electricity or running on a battery and that is disposed of from the original user • Some examples of e-waste are • cell phones • computers • computer monitors • chargers • adapters

How do cell phones harm the environment? • Cell phones are used everyday around the world for various purposes • Because cell phone features and designs are constantly being improved/upgraded, people often change/upgrade their phone, thus creating a large amount of cell phone waste • If improperly disposed, the chemicals and metals inside cell phones can become toxic to the soil if taken to landfills

  4. Chemicals/ Metals Inside Cell Phones Cell phones contain chemicals and heavy metals that can become deleterious after a certain amount of time, such as: • Bromine • Lead • Mercury • Copper • Nickel • Zinc • Cadmium • Chlorine

Cell Phones and Health Cell phones have been researched to: • Cause cancer • Emit radiation • Emit radiofrequency energy (a form of radiation) In the USA, twenty million children under the age of fourteen have cell phones. The bone marrow of a child’s head can absorb up to ten times more radiation than an adult.

How do computers harm the environment? • From 2003 to 2005, 85% of disposed electronic waste went to landfills or incinerators. • Computers contain • brominated flame retardants(BFRs) • brominated flame retardants can cause severe health problems such as: • thyroid problems • neurobehavioral disorders • liver tumors • immune system problems. • They also contain • lead • mercury  • cadmium • beryllium  • arsenic • Due to new technologies being introduced to society, it is predicted that over a million computers will be thrown away in the next five years.
