  1. Mr. Niall Douglas Week 6: International LawMonday 28th Feb

  2. Schedule for today • 9am-10am: Review of last week’s grades • 10am-11am: The Corporation part 1 • 11.20am-12pm: The Corporation part 2 • 12pm-12.20pm: Business vocab • 12.20pm-12.40pm: Explain tonight’s reading • 12.40pm-1.20pm: Explain this week’s group task

  3. Before anything else ... • Congratulations once again to Group 3 who won last week’s Group Presentations! • I hope you enjoy your prize!

  4. Last week’s grades • I am only about half way through marking your exam scripts ... • Weighting is: • 10% attendance • 30% vocab • 30% written question • 30% Group Task written report

  5. Last week’s grades Average: 88% 62% 65% ? 59%

  6. Last week’s grades • Why on average you did so badly: • Not answering the question • Repeating points you already made (i.e. Padding) • Writing non sequiturs (meaningless comments which have no bearing on the answer) i.e. Padding • Lack of academic referencing and citations for facts

  7. Last week’s grades • Padding answers = wasting words = wasting marks • Every word you write needs to “earn” you marks • At my Business School, we would prewrite exam answers and learn them off by heart in order to maximise how much we wrote • This means instead of thinking of what to write in the exam you are instead writing constantly and therefore earning more marks

  8. Last week’s grades • In academic writing and business reports you must ALWAYS academically reference facts with citations • If you cannot find a trusted source for a fact, you CANNOT use it as a fact (maybe you can as a supposition, opinion or logical strawman) • To achieve a top grade, 80% of anything you EVER write should be properly referenced and citated facts!

  9. Academic referencing • What’s a trusted source? In order of trustworthiness: • Articles from peer reviewed journals • Government statistics • Books from well regarded academics • Sometimes newspapers

  10. Academic referencing • How do you reference? • In Business academia, the Harvard Business Review is the most important academic journal in the world • It uses the “Harvard referencing style” for citations • These look like this ...

  11. Academic referencing As McGeady (2006, pp. 250-253) reports, calves born more than three months early have a 26% increased chance of morbidity. OR ... given how calves born more than three months early have a 26% increased chance of morbidity (McGeady 2006, pp. 250-253). McGeady, T. A. et al (2006) Veterinary embryology. Oxford: Blackwell.

  12. Academic Referencing • There are other styles of academic referencing e.g. IEEE, APA, ISO 690 • I personally don’t care which you use so long as you use one • Other academics will vary. Some are VERY finickety about using a very specific style and will automatically fail any paper not using the “right” one

  13. Last week’s grades • Questions?

  14. The Corporation • The Corporation is the dominant institution of our time • It is entirely a LEGAL CONSTRUCTION • Because of how it has been LEGALLY DEFINED, there are massive consequences for our planet and our society • We spent two full weeks at my Business School studying this documentary. Sadly, we only get half a day here.

  15. Group Assignments for this week • Alexandre, Romain, Clemence, Julie • Rachida, Sitra, Maxime, Jeremy • Leslie, Louis, Calvin, Anne-Charlotte • Hubert, Steven, Manon, Tanguy, Camille

  16. Business Vocab • Multiple choice Business Vocab ...

  17. Tonight’s reading • Explain Tonight’s reading

  18. This Week’s Group Task • Explain this week’s Group Task

  19. Group Task Work Plans • Check Group Task Work Plans
