Institution introduction Andrija Štampar School of Public Healthis a unique public health teaching institution in a way that it does not fit into any of the eight structure models proposed by Evelyne de Leeuw in the article European shcools of public health in state of flux published in Lancet in 1995.

Institution introduction (cont.) • undergraduate, • master programs in PH disciplines (MPH), and • doctoral (PhD) program that includes different PH taught courses opened to professionals of both, medical and non-medical background. Beinga part of Zagreb Medical School, but also the institution of its own, the School has a long tradition in all three levels of education:
Institution introduction (cont.) was founded in 1927 by the efforts ofdr. Andrija Štampar and the financial support of the Rockefeller Foundation as a part of the institution named “Institute of Hygiene with the School of Public Health” and was engaged in many field campaigns (health education, disease control, rural sanitation). After the World War II it became an institution affiliated to Zagreb University Medical School and provides teaching for medical students.

Tradition has a long tradition in postgraduate education of public health professionals, both as a part of medical specialization and training for research (MPH and PhD programs). This training started in 1947 with MPH program in Public Health and Epidemiologyfollowed by other programs.
Contemporary Challenges • Leadership and Management of Health Services (introduced in 2001) New progams were recently introduced or envisaged: Two other programs that will be introduced with the support of the Council of Europe and its Social Cohesion initiative are • Health, Human Rights and Ethic, and • Environmental and Occupational Health
Contemporary Challenges (cont.) The School has recently started reconstruction of its postgraduate curriculumas a part of the Joint Program of the Open Society Institute and ASPHER for quality development of PH teaching programs in CEE. The Project “Public Health Capacity Building” started in 2002 and has following goals: • modularization of curriculum and its modernization (adaptation to new needs) • introduction of ECTS and common core curriculum • further development of teaching staff and technologies
Bologna process and Croatian legislation Croatia signed the Bologna Declaration in 2001 in Prague and has made changes in legislation on higher education. According to the new Law on Scientific Activity and Higher Education(adopted in July 2003) there are no more Master of Science degree. Modular scientific postgraduate program in Biomedicine and Health Sciences has been run since 1998 at Zagreb University Medical School and offer obtaining of MSc and PhD degrees (only PhD degree since academic year 2003/04).
PhD program Biomedicine and Health Sciences PhD program include- organized teaching and studying- research activities are obligatory It lasts 3 years (part-time) It includes PH subjects as well • Modules are:- peer-reviewed- ECTS scored • There are 2 type of modules:- methodological (16)- field related (132+39)
PhD program Biomedicine and Health Sciences Students are medical doctors andgraduates with non-medical background Students have the opportunity:- to choose among great number of modules- to shape each student own program that meets individual needs in academic career and continuing professional development It is enabled:- evaluation of each and every type of scholar work relevant for gaining qualification and competence for scientific research- student mobility
