  1. Biodiesel: Lab and Process Analyses for Production Optimisation

  2. MB3600-Lab • These analysers provide rapid lab-based analyses of (a) reactor intermediate biodiesel (b) finished B100 biodiesel (c) blended biodiesel / mineral diesel product • The standard analytical methods are slow (hours or days) and often require multiple physical analyses per sample. FTIR offers rapid multi-property analysis.

  3. MB3600-Lab • There is a high probability of upcoming capacity constraint in the biodiesel production industry, due to the mis-match between planned plant investment (already high) and stated political objectives for exchange of petrodiesel with biodiesel. • A key factor in the Industry will be near 100% plant utilisation. This will push quality constraints very hard.

  4. Target Market • Target market will be Biodiesel production plant in the 50 – 100,000 tpy (tonnes per year) capacity • Global capacity will exceed 60M tpy by 2012 • Approx 1000 plants in the correct size bracket during first 5 years for Lab units • Approx 500 plants in the upper size bracket during first 5 years for On-Line units

  5. What is Biodiesel? • Biodiesel is a transport fuel oil made mainly from organic vegetable oils, such as rapeseed oil and palm oil. The production process is called transesterification.

  6. Biodiesel Chemistry Vegetable Oil – Rapeseed, Soybean, Palm, Jatropha Alcohol - Methanol Base Catalyst – KOH, NaOH 2-Stage Transesterification Settling Centrifugation Free Gycerol + Mono-, Di-, Tri-Gycerides + Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) BIODIESEL

  7. Key Advantages • Renewable (carbon-neutral ) • Non-toxic • Used in unmodified engine • Higher lubricity (prolong engine life) • Simple to make • Used neat or blended • Significantly reduced emissions • Biodegradable • High flashpoint (safer to store/transport) • Classified as non-hazardous

  8. Existing ABB FTIR Solutions for Petrodiesel and Oleochemicals • Oleochemicals – Lab/Online solution for the multiparameter analysis of oils and fats (IV, %Trans Fatty Acid, Acid Number, Moisture). • Diesel Blending – Lab/Online solution for the analysis of Diesel Fuel properties for blending, both feedstock's and finished products (Cetane, Cloud Point, Flash Point, Distillation, Viscosity, Aromatics).

  9. Biodiesel Lab QA/QC Lab Analysis QA/QC • At-line Reactor Profile and End Point determination • B100 biodiesel QA/QC • Blended biodiesel fuel properties and FAME%

  10. Biodiesel On-line Production Monitoring • On-Line Reaction Monitoring • Real-time Reactor Profile and End Point determination • Multichannel, Multi-Property • Methyl Ester%, Methanol%, Moisture ppm, Glycerol%, Mono-, Di- and Tri-Glyceride%
