Case Study – New York Power Authority (NYPA) Custom Application Development • The UCI team was awarded contract to develop NYPA Time and Attendance Management System. Since this was supposed to be an intranet application, a web based application development tool was needed and UCI proposed using ASP to develop the application with Oracle 8i as the database for storing data. Using this system, employees can fill their time sheets online and they can also modify it before getting their time sheet approved. It also assisted in managing project hours and would be accessible to all employees. Security being the most critical aspect, the application was developed by implementing role based security. For e.g. a manager can view time sheets of all employees under him only. An employee can view/modify/create only his time sheets. Once a time sheet is approved, the time sheet cannot be modified by the employee but can only be viewed. All time sheets are recorded based on the pay period for which the time sheets are filled. Time sheets are recorded on a weekly basis or on a daily basis depending on the convenience of the employee. NYPA also wanted the FLSA rules to be incorporated within the system. Lastly the application allowed the running of various reports by the managers. All reports were designed using Crystal Reports 8.5, a reporting tool that could be viewed on the browser. Internet Explorer 6.0 is the standard browser used in NYPA. UCI not only designed and developed this system but also is helping NYPA and its employees in maintaining and supporting the system. Training on a large scale was conducted for all the employees in helping them to understand the system and how to use it. • Other NYPA PROJECTS • SAP BW Administration • Billing System Enhancement • Oracle Portal Development • Energy Trading System Support Unique Comp Inc

Case Study – U.S. Peace Corps – .NET Development • In the fall of 2006, UCI (under the Financial Systems Group) had a requirement to computerize a manual process of submitting financial data for a particular application from overseas posts to headquarters. This process would greatly reduce the time taken to complete this process manually each month. Since the posts would access headquarters from the Internet, a two factor authentication scheme was necessary in order to ensure the privacy of the transactions. During this period the organization was already in stages of integrating its IT infrastructure globally and in this particular case, it needed a timely and cost effective software solution that complied with government standard authorization and encryption procedures. The group tasked UCI's contractors currently working within the Financial Systems group, to provide a design and implementation of a compliant framework that can be utilized not only by the current requirement but also for future similar applications. The framework was designed to support web-based applications that do not require constant connectivity with the headquarter servers. The core components of the implementation are SSL digital certificates, AES and SHA-1 encryption and hashing algorithms, on the .NET platform. This overseas authorization infrastructure was able to enforce the two-factor security requirements in considerably less cost, and streamline the authentication scheme of similar applications that posts will need to use in the future. • The scope of work involved with the project included single logon functionality, usually available only from completely integrated IT environments, and implemented transparently from the user, also supporting legacy applications at posts. The solution integrated Microsoft's .NET forms authentication architecture with enhanced custom security features to strengthen the security of the transactions. It was through the combined efforts of the UCI team and Peace corps business users that the project was completed on time and within budget. • UCI also supported Peace Corps’ Oracle financial management system, Odyssey/FOR Post. UCI is assisting Peace Corps in post implementation activities, software upgrades, enhancement of core functionalities and future phase-in of additional functionalities and integration. The core modules implemented were: general ledger, accounts payable, purchasing, accounts receivable, project accounting, FOR Post overseas (front end), HRM (non-employee payments), and budget tracking through Oracle Financial Analyzer.
Case Study - KPMG Information Security Consulting UCI team assisted KPMG in reviewing the existing IT control framework for its customers, which included the IT policies, risk assessment, and the IT Audit plan. Our team conducted Internal Vulnerability Assessment by employing a mixture of purchased network software that was deemed appropriate for the customer’s specific network configuration. We established a methodology for penetration testing to the internal defense and evaluated the relative strength of the automated controls, while gauging the effectiveness of the customer’s manual procedures, such as monitoring and escalation. UCI team also conducted external penetration test by reviewing the controls over access to customers from external sources. The Internal Vulnerability Assessment and External Penetration Test procedures included techniques such as brute force password attacks, exploitation of any known security gaps that may exist at target devices such as routers, firewalls, etc., use of specialized hacker software and the use of any network monitoring facilities that may be accessible from remote locations.
Case Study – Talecris Biotheraputics - MPLS Migration – Voice Over IP The scope of the project is to implement MPLS (PIP) with Managed WAN services for both domestic and international locations with fully managed services. The implementation will touch on all Centers (54 Centers), the Donor Management System (DMS) hosting service Site in Edmonton, Canada, and the DMS contingency Site, and the Clayton NC facility. The use of MPLS will be extended for use beyond DMS as other systems come online. It will involve upgrades to existing communication lines and establish resilient and alternate paths to the DMS Hosting Site in Edmonton, Canada and to the Hub Site at Clayton, NC. New routers will be deployed at each of the spoke sites. Circuits to the Centers will be replaced with MPLS T1’s (1.536 Mbps) instead of the Internet. Routing of these circuits will be through the Verizon MPLS network. Backup broadband (high-speed) circuits will be provided in a failover configuration and will also be routed through the MPLS network using secure VPN. OOB (Out of Band) analog lines will be used for managing the network devices. Talecris will order these lines and have them installed prior to the startup of the network. The solution will provide redundant VPN connection into Clayton & HSS using VPN over Broadband. At completion of Migration, Talecris will work with UCI in analyzing a VOIP solution for all branches in the U.S. VOIP project will start 2nd qtr of 2008. Currently reviewing solutions and speaking with vendors (i.e. Cisco, NEC, AT&T)
Case Study – Mizuho Corporate Bank, U.S.A. Voice Over IP migration In 2005 Mizuho Corporate Bank needed to conduct an analysis for migration from PSTN to Voice Over IP environment, for the America’s. UCI’s role was to conduct an assessment of ROI for a VOIP implementation, taking into account factors such as the state of the existing IT and telephony infrastructure (multi vendor environment), the types of investment required for a VOIP migration and the cost savings that may be expected. Additionally, Mizuho needed to determine whether to go with the traditional in-house approach, a hosted model or a managed services option. Given the potentially high startup and manpower costs and the lack of technical know how within the organization, the managed services model was recommended by the UCI engineering team. Our recommendation was based on the theory that a managed services model may provide the best route forward, enabling there enterprise to reduce the risks involved in VoIP deployment while tapping on the service providers expertise to address quality of service and network management issues. There were several steps involved in assessing the ROI of a VoIP implementation, starting with a preplanning phase which included a baseline assessment of the existing infrastructure and an evaluation of the cost and issues associated with the current voice platform. The cost would have to be identified and qualified. This took in to account the capital and operations costs, including the cost of planning, acquisition and procurement, setup and installation , management and support, evolution and retirement,. The potential benefits would also be identified and qualified and weighed against these costs. UCI competed the assessment within budget and time frame and the approach recommended was adopted.
