  21. Major Editorial Changes • 4-19-3:Clarified the definition of an intentional foul. • An intentional foul is a personal or technical foul that neutralizes an opponents obvious advantageous position. Contact away from the ball or when not making a legitimate attempt to play the ball, specifically designed to stop or keep the clock from starting, shall be intentional. Intentional fouls may or may not be premeditated and are not based on the severity of the act. A foul also shall be ruled intentional if while playing the ball a player causes excessive contact with an opponent. AOS

  22. Major Editorial Changes • 5-2-1:Clarified when a three-point goal shall be scored. • A successful try, tap or thrown ball from the field by a player who is located behind the team’s own 19-foot, 9-inch arc counts three points. A ball that touches the floor, a teammate inside the arc, an official, or any other goal from the field counts two points for the team into whose basket the ball is thrown. AOS

  23. Major Editorial Changes • 10-4-4 New, 10-5:A new article was added to 10-4 clarifying when bench personnel may stand. Section 10-5 was reorganized to clarify the head coaches' rule. AOS

  24. Major Editorial Changes • 10-4-4 New, 10-5:Bench personnel shall not: • Stand in the team bench area while the clock is running or is stopped, and must remain seated, except: • The head coach as in 10-5. • When a team member is reporting to the scorer’s table. • During a charged time-out, as in 5-12-5, or the intermission between quarters and extra period. • To spontaneously react to an outstanding play by a team member or to acknowledge a replaced player(s), but must immediately return to his/her seat. AOS

  25. Points of Emphasis • Sporting Behavior • Uniforms: • emotional displays • after disqualification • normal course of play • multiple warnings • use coaches AOS

  26. Points of Emphasis • Sporting Behavior • Time-outs: • Players leaving bench after whistle for a time-out in celebration. • Opposing team passes through players - potential problem, bumping, pushing, taunting, etc. • Preventative officiating is in order. AOS

  27. Points of Emphasis • Sporting Behavior • Spectators: • Increasing problems encroaching on areas deemed off limits. • Game administration. • Officials should never directly confront fans. • Coaches must not incite fan behavior. AOS

  28. Points of Emphasis • Sporting Behavior • Coaches box • Black & white rule. • Officials not enforcing it. • Coaching has no bearing on rule. • Once removed, can’t get it back. • Assistant coaches must sit. • Head coaches responsibility - administrators must support by demanding their coaches comply. AOS

  29. Points of Emphasis • Free Throws • Lane spaces • Not eliminating first lane space. • Rough play - keep block, do not allow “lock up,” nor drive players under basket - call the foul! • Disconcertion - yelling instructions to other players, outside arc player talking to shooter, etc. AOS

  30. Points of Emphasis • Intentional Fouls • Anytime, acts that neutralize an opponent’s obvious advantageous position. • Excessive contact • Grabbing or shoving an player from behind when an easy basket may be scored. • Grabbing and holding a player from behind or away from the ball. • “Non-basketball” plays and must be considered intentional fouls anytime they occur during a game. AOS

  31. Points of Emphasis • Intentional Fouls • Late in the game. Fouling is an accepted coaching strategy and is utilized by nearly all coaches in some form. There is widespread belief that it works or it wouldn’t be coached. • There is a right way and a wrong way to foul. • Coaches must instruct their players in the proper technique for strategic fouling. • Officials must have the courage to enforce the intentional foul rule. AOS

  32. Summary • Know the rules. • Review the rules. • Pre-game review - all on same page. • Understand the intent of the rules - let that guide you. • Have a great season! • Thank you! AOS

  33. I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone, From the beginning...to the end. He noted that first came her date of birth and spoke the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. (1934 - 1998) For that dash represents all the time That she spent alive on earth... And now only those who loved her, Know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own; the cars...the house...the cash, What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard... Are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left, That can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough To consider what's true and real, And always try to understand The way other people feel And be less quick to anger, And show appreciation more And love the people in our lives Like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect, And more often wear a smile. Remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy's being read With your life's actions to rehash... Would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash? AOS
