  2. An “On-Demand” World • Modes of distribution will no longer be limited to analog and digital broadcasting. • Now we have: • Internet and Broadband • Cable and Satellite • DVD and VHS • VOD • Portable and hand-held devices

  3. UNC-TV Mission • Maximize the use of the assets we have available to help North Carolinians easily access knowledge. • Demonstrate that UNC-TV can be an effective asset in helping to achieve North Carolina’s educational goals in the digital age.

  4. UNC-TV has valuable content! • Our program library has volumes of programming on videotape • Tape shelf life is expiring • Some figures: • 3300 programs • 2000 hours • 2500 tapes • Not all content is in the library

In Conclusion…… • UNC-TV is moving forward in phases • No major media company is moving into the future without implementing some sort of a digital asset management system. • Public Broadcasting – WGBH, Georgia PTV • CNN • Discovery Communications • National Geographic • Major League Baseball, NBA • Digital media will be a large component of the reference library of the future.

  14. And most of all…… High Capacity, High Quality broadband networking, such as Gigabit Ethernet, will make it possible for consumers to use rich content and remove barriers to access!
