GEOGRAPHY • THE 7 REGIONS OF CANADA… • Cordillera- MOUNTAIN WEST Includes the Rockies and the Pacific Range (British Columbia, Yukon Territories) • Arctic Islands- Tundra Region (Nunavut and Northwest Territories) • Interior Plains- Farmland, known as Canada’s breadbasket (Alberta, Saskatchewan) • Canadian Shield-[covers East half of Canada] rich in minerals and natural resources. (Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec)
GEOGRAPHY • 7 REGIONS CONTINUED… • Hudson Bay Lowlands- covered by flat swamplands and stunted trees (Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec) • St. Lawrence Lowlands- Canal system that helps trade (St. Lawrence River and great lakes) Most people live in this region…most populous cities • Appalachian Highlands- Fishing is the biggest industry.(Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, PEI)

How are they solving them? • The main problems in Canada are: Over fishing, Pollution and natural resource depletion. • In order to fix this problem Canadians are banning fishing in certain areas to allow the fish to repopulate . • Raw Materials (natural resources) are not traded as frequently as before. • Canadians are focused on helping the environment and reducing the pollution.
HISTORY AND CULTURE • Who are the First Nations people? - The first nations people are Canada’s native people. Also known as the Inuit. They arrived in Canada over 4,000 years ago.

HISTORY AND CULTURE • What does multiculturalism mean in Canda?- Multiculturalism means the acceptance of many cultures instead of just one. (For example: the Inuit culture, French culture and other European cultures are all accepted in Canada)
HISTORY AND CULTURE • What are refugees and where have they come from? - Refugees are people who have left their country because of war, disaster or persecution. The refugees that came to Canada were from China (Hong Kong), Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
HISTORY AND CULTURE • How did the first people reach Canada? Scientists believe that people reached Canada by crossing a land-bridge that is currently the Bering-Strait. - The water levels were much lower thousands of years ago, therefore people were able to come from Asia to North America.
GOVERNMENT • What type of government does Canada have? -Canada has a CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY [Has a constitution that explains the powers of the government, they also are loyal to the British king/queen.]
GOVERNMENT • Who is the head of government, who is the head of state?- The head of government is the PRIME MINISTER. The head of state is the BRITISH MONARCH.
GOVERNMENT • What are the branches of Parliament. - Parliament has 2 Houses (bicameral) They are the House of Commons and The Senate.
GOVERNMENT • What territory was created for the Inuit? - Nunavut (which means “Our Land”) was created for the Inuit people in 1999.
GOVERNMENT • Who are the separatists? • Separatists are people who want Quebec to separate from Canada to become their own country. [In 1980 and 1995 there was a vote to determine whether or not the law would pass… it did not.]
GOVERNMENT • What did Pierre Trudeau do for Canada? • Pierre Trudeau led an effort to add a “Charter of Rights” which is similar to the USA’s Bill of Rights. • The Charter guarantees freedom of speech, press and religion and citizens’ right to vote.
GOVERNMENT • Why is Quebec so important to Canada? • Quebec is a major manufacturing industry in Canada. Half of Canada’s aerospace production is done by Quebec. • 38% of Canada’s high tech industry is produced by Quebec also. • If Quebec left Canada, their economy would suffer.
ECONOMICS • How are the 4 levels of industry different from each other? • 1. Primary Industry~ prepares and processes raw materials. Ex: farms and mining and logging companies • 2. Secondary Industry- Manufacturing- these turn raw materials into products. EX. Car manufacturers, bakeries, factories

Quaternary Industry~ Pass on information to people and companies Ex. Communication companies, advertisements, Internet service providers, financial companies.

ECONOMICS • What are Canada’s main exports? • Canada exports many natural resources. • 80% of Canada’s raw materials are exported out of the country. • Wood, paper products, fuel, minerals, aluminum, wheat and oil.
ECONOMICS • What are some trade barriers and corridors in Canada? • Barriers (these keep trade from occurring) Snow and ice in the north block travel by land and water. The Rocky mountains are a huge obstacle. • Some trade barriers are man-made for example a trade EMBARGO, is when a government stops all trade with another country. A tariff is a tax on imported goods.

ECONOMICS • How does Specialization encourage trade? • Specialization is • When people, regions, or nations produce a narrower range of goods than they consume. (80% of Canada’s raw materials are exported to other countries…only 20% is used by actual Canadians) • Example: teacher works with students, but lives in a house, drives a car, wears clothes- all built by others. • With specialization, better products can be made faster and countries can trade. • FOR EXAMPLE: Canada specializes in trading grains, wood, fish, minerals and fish!
