New Directions Overview • Operator of Greater New Bedford and Wareham Career Centers • Employment and training services and programs for Title 1 Adults, Youth and Dislocated Workers • Sub-contract with Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board for Framework Services of all youth programs • Framework services includes: intake and eligibility, workplace assignment, payroll and oversight of program implementation

Massachusetts Child Labor LawsWork Permits • All youth under age 18 must obtain a work permit • Exception are youth age 17 who present documentation of high school diploma or equivalent • All work permits must be on file at worksite • New Directions should receive copies of all work permits
Summer Employment Safety Guidelines • Youth must be supervised at all times • Employers must provide protective equipment when needed and must ensure that equipment is in good working condition • Youth may not work in extreme heat • Employers must keep copies of health condition report / medical release on file at worksite • All injuries, illnesses and incidents involving youth workers must be reported to New Directions immediately
Program Coordinators • Each worksite has an assigned New Directions program coordinator to monitor worksites and coordinate payroll materials • Program coordinator will ensure that all sites are in compliance with Child Labor Laws and that safety guidelines are followed • Program coordinators will communicate with site supervisors on youth performance and discuss issues that may arise • Program coordinators will assist youth in need with supportive services if needed
Youth Orientation • All New Directions youth workers attended orientation prior to starting work • All youth workers signed policies on safety, harassment and program rules • Copies of policies and program rules are available on New Directions website www.newdirectionssouthcoast.org • Violations of program rules pertaining to drugs, alcohol, weapons or violence are grounds for immediate dismissal
Payroll Materials • Site supervisors are responsible for tracking youth attendance and monitoring sign-in sheets • Employers are responsible for ensuring that youth have completed time cards by the designated pick-up/drop-off time. • Program coordinators will work with employers to arrange distribution of youth paychecks • Youth must sign payroll manifest when receiving check and checks are to be given to only the youth unless otherwise communicated by the youth themselves.
Discipline and Termination Protocol • Employers are responsible for on-the-spot feedback regarding youth performance • Youth may be accountable to all policies held by the employer in addition to New Directions policies • Program coordinator may assist in discipline procedure if deemed appropriate by New Directions or the employer • New Directions must receive copies of all discipline records including verbal and written warnings, suspensions and terminations
