  2. Chapter Project – 50 points • Finding Numbers • During this chapter you will be assigned to a group of 3. Your goal is to list as many quantities as possible (minimum of 10). • For example: • There are 12 student desks in this classroom. • There are 2 sets of windows. • There are 2 pencil sharpeners. • There are 3 filing cabinets. • I have 12 cans of corn at home. • I have 223 DVD’s. • Your teams job is to find large quantities of items in the school and at your own house.

  3. You will need to establish some way of keeping track of your information to share. • Ideas include: • Using the computer and typing out a list. • Keeping a journal. • Creating a poster • You must present your findings to the class. • You will only be given 3 class days to work as a team. • Day 1: Meet your teammates. Get a list going of items to quantify • Day 2: Follow up with classmates, begin thinking about how you will present your findings. • Day 3: Create your project to present.

  4. Grading: 30 points will be given by my evaluation, using the rubric below 15 points will be earned by your teammates evaluations 5 points earned by your classmates during your presentation

Goals for Learning: • To review addition and subtraction using whole numbers • To learn to estimate sums and differences • To review multiplication and division using whole numbers • To learn to estimate products and quotients • To recognize true, false, and open statements • To recognize algebraic and numerical expressions • To evaluate algebraic expressions

Lesson 1: Adding Whole Numbers • Vocabulary – • Whole Number – numbers such as -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, etc. • Algebra – the branch of math that uses both letters and numbers to show relations between quantities • Arithmetic – the study of the properties of numbers using four basic operations • Operation – add, subtract, multiply, divide

  8. Addition – combining two or more numbers to find a total • Addend – numbers to be added to another • Sum – the answer to an addition problem
