Place the sentences into the correct order then complete the table on pg 50.

4. Mar 7 Academic Writing Unit 3 (pg 51 – 53) Punctuation – Apostrophes, Contractions, Possessives Rules for Forming Possessives – When to add an apostrophe + s and when to add an apostrophe alone. Practice – Change each item into a possessive phrase. Practice – Make a possessive phrase. Practice – Write eight sentences, using a possessive phrase in each.

5. Mar 14 Academic Writing Unit 3 (pg 54 – 56) The Writing Process – The best way to organize a paragraph is to make an outline. Simple Outline – Use bullet points to write a short topic sentence following by several short supporting sentences. Detailed Outline – Elaborate on the simple outline by including more detail for both the topic and supporting sentences. Practice – Complete the outline of the paragraph “Animals in Captivity”.

6. Mar 21 Academic Writing Unit 3 (pg 56 – 57) Paragraphs – A paragraph has three parts: a topic sentence, several supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. Supporting sentences explain the controlling idea in detail. The concluding sentence repeats the main idea in different words. Choose a topic from pg 40 and write a paragraph. Be sure to follow the steps outlined on pg 57.

7. Mar 28 Academic Writing Unit 3 (pg 58 – 59) Summary Writing – A summary is a short statement that gives the main information about something without giving all the detail. Read the short paragraph on pg 58 and the following summary. Notice how the summary gives the main points but no details. Exercise – Work alone or with a classmate and summarize the paragraph “Introducing Myself”.

8. Apr 4 Academic Writing Unit 4 (pg 61 – 64) Descriptive Paragraphs – Descriptive writing appeals to the senses, and/or sounds. A good description is a word picture. Spatial Order – Good writers use spatial order to organize their ideas. At the top of, In the center, On the left, In front of, In the front of, Inside, Next to, Between, Behind, In back of, Across Practice – Work with a classmate, read the topic sentences and then work with a classmate to discuss what to describe next.

Apr 25 Academic Writing Unit 4 (pg 65– 68) Supporting Sentences for Descriptive Paragraphs – Not only should these sentences provide the details that prove the truth of your topic sentence, but they also make your writing rich. Model – Read the “My Banana Garden” paragraph and answer the questions on pg 65. Practice – Read the “My Banana Garden” paragraph again and work with a classmate to brainstorm some ideas to create a descriptive paragraph.

12. May 2 Academic Writing Unit 4 (pg 68 – 71) Compound Sentences – How to create compound sentences using yet, for and nor. Practice – Underline five compound sentences in the model paragraph on pg 68, then join the example sentences together using a coordinating conjunction. Varying Sentence Openings – How to use prepositional phrases to express time, place and possession. Practice – Underline all the prepositional phrases and then punctuate the example sentences.

13. May 9 Academic Writing Unit 4 (pg 72 - 74) Clustering – When you cluster, you start by writing your topic in a circle in the middle of your paper. As you think of related ideas, you write these in smaller circles around the main circle. Model – Examine the “A Place from My Childhood” clustering example to see how to cluster. Practice – Pick a topic and then create your own cluster to generate ideas about your topic. Exercise – Write a summary of “The Stairway” and remember to be as brief as possible.

14. May 16 Academic Writing Unit 4 (pg 75) Write a descriptive paragraph in class. Follow the steps on pg 75: prewrite, organize your ideas, write a draft, polish the draft and then hand in the final copy.

15. May 23 Academic Writing Unit 5 (pg 77 – 79) Organization – Logical Division of Ideas Paragraph. Notice how paragraph are divided to include several supporting ideas. Begin a logical division paragraph with a topic sentence. In the supporting sentences, discuss each point in detail. Support each point with detail. End the paragraph with a concluding sentence. Practice – Choose a topic from pg 78 and then practice writing your own paragraph with at least three points supporting your idea.

16. May 30 Academic Writing Unit 5 (pg 79 – 81) Coherence – A coherent paragraph flows smoothly from beginning to end. Using Nouns and Pronouns Consistently – Coherence can be achieved by using nouns and pronouns consistently. Don’t switch or change. Practice – Circle the noun that is the topic of the paragraph, then edit the paragraphs for consistent nouns and pronouns.

17. Jun 06 Academic Writing Unit 5 (pg 81 – 83) Transition Signals – How to list ideas in time order. How to list ideas in logical division of ideas order. How to add a similar idea. How to add an opposite idea. Read paragraph one and two to see how transition signals are used to make the paragraph easier to read and understand. Sentence connectors can not only be used at the beginning of a sentence, but also in the middle and end of a sentence.
