Clissold Montessori Plan Climbing Higher
Why expand Montessori? • Allows us to improve our curriculum and instruction • Strengthens whole school community • Equalizes and stabilizes classes • Provides improved transition into IB at 6th grade • Increased use of hands-on, manipulative instructional methods • Increased levels of individualized learning • Builds leadership, responsibility, and school ownership within the multi-age classroom structure
Why now? In place of the previous Minimal Funding received in years past, CPS provided schools like Clissold with additional funds under the Title IIA Teacher Quality Grant ($86K) • Limited usage of funds • Teacher Professional Development • Extended Day or Substitutes to attend Professional Development • Costs for Recruiting High Quality Teachers • Supplies required to implement Professional Development • Reduced Class Size positions
How we are using the $84K • 0.5 Reduced Class Size position ($41,476) • Training for Montessori Expansion • $18K for 6 teachers to receive distance learning through North American Montessori Center • $2500 for substitutes to allow teachers to observe and coach each other • $500 for Extended Day pay for additional collaboration • $21,800 for Montessori specific materials required to implement training
How will this happen? • 2011-2012 School Year • Non-Montessori teachers will complete Diploma program through NAMC distance learning • Established Montessori teachers will mentor and collaborate with their peers • Classroom set-ups will be determined and purchasing will begin using Title IIA and roll-over funds • Time will be dedicated to mapping out how Clissold will blend Montessori philosophies and public school accountabilities
What will happen next? • 2012-2013 School Year • All kindergarten and first grade students will be in multi-grade Montessori classrooms • Teachers newly trained in Montessori will implement Montessori methods in the single grade level (Second grade will become Second Grade Montessori) • Teachers will continue to mentor and collaborate • Teachers will continue to map out the K-5 curriculum using Montessori philosophies
And then? • 2013-2014 School Year • All students will be in a multi-age Montessori classroom for grades K-5 • Students who were in 2nd grade Montessori and 4th grade Montessori the prior school year will remain with their same teacher for 3rd and 5th grade.
