MG587 Systems Engineering Class Intro Steve Chenoweth Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology With credits to Bill Kline and others for much of the course materials!
Topics for Week 1 • Class Overview – On course website • Introductions • Angel • Syllabus / Schedule • Systems in the News • ‘Deep Dive’ Video – Did you get to see? • Presentation – Intro to SE • Mars Rover Curiosity example • Term Project – Topics and Teams
Introductions • A proper intro in Victorian times. From http://gailcarriger.livejournal.com/156585.html
Systems in the Systems News MSL's (Mars Science Laboratory) components include a car-sized rover, Curiosity, which has 10 science instruments designed to search for signs of life, including methane, and help determine if the gas is from a biological or geological source.
Systems Examples • Many examples from the space program • Complex systems • Real-time, high-risk scenarios • Dramatic events • Historical perspective • Current activities • Future concepts and designs
Textbooks • Buede book presents one approach in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). • Wasson book is detailed, complete and a good reference book on SE.
About Me • Grew up in Indy – Broad Ripple HS • Butler University – BA in Math, MS in Ed • Industry • NCR Corp – 1974 – 1995 • While there, got MBA, MS in CS, and PhD in Comp Sci & Engg • Ended up as Consulting Systems Analyst in Corp R&D • AT&T & Lucent – 1995 – 2002 • Taught systems architecture for Advanced Technology Group • Led reviews of the designs for 50 different systems • Rose-Hulman – 2003 - Now • One of 3 who launched the BSSE program • One of 2 who launched the MSSE program • Wife in Dayton, kids overly Ivy League!
References • Buede, The Engineering Design of Systems, Models and Methods, Wiley. • Wasson, System Analysis, Design, and Development, Wiley. • www.incose.org - Rough equivalent to IEEE, but for systems engineers. • Have their own “body of knowledge,” conferences, journals, training, etc. • www.ictt.com - An example of a “systems engineering company” • Especially does interdisciplinary projects.
The Deep Dive • A light introduction to a systems and design problem. • Try to view the 3 YouTube videos before class! • Let’s discuss
