Meet the Teacher… • ---Taught Pre-Kdg. and Kindergarten for 5 years. • ---Continued to teach all other grades from 1st-5th. • ---Reading Specialist for 5 years • ---This is my 31st year of teaching; eleventh year in Cobb County, 7th year at Due West. • ---I enjoy spending time with my three teenagers; Alex 19, Nikolai 16, and Savannah soon to be 13. • ---Favorite past time, reading and being outdoors in the sun by any body of water.

Shared Reading – modeling strategies for reading fluency and comprehension Guided Reading – Small group – differentiated for individual student needs – fiction and non-fiction text Literacy Centers – revisit skills in word work, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension
Accelerated Reader program Access to over 139,000 quizzes (more added weekly) Students take quizzes at school Renaissance Home Connect for parents to check their child’s progress (see letter in your packet) Book Finder feature lists quizzes 2nd grade expectation of earning 1 point per week for a total of 7 points the first grading period Point goals will increase each 9 weeks
Time:1:40-2:10 -Students will follow a writing process of pre-writing, drafting, revising and sometimes publishing. -Students will share their writing During author’s chair. We will study several author’s style to help us become better writers.
Words Their Way workbooks • Word Sorts for various phonemes • Spelling words will come from sort patterns AND “High Frequency” word lists • Weekly spelling practice sent home on Mondays • Assessments will be Mondays and may include additional words from the pattern family

Mondays: Introduction of Spelling Patterns Tuesdays and Wednesdays: Math OR Language Arts OR Reading practice (1 page) Thursdays: RAZ-Kids, Tumblebooks-one will be assigned H.W. should be 20-30 tops! * Students will add a sticker each day for work completion. H.W. passes can be used when needed

Evaluating Student Progress Each student will be assessed to determine his/her progress toward mastery of the standards in the subjects of Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Social Studies, Technology, Mathematics, Science, and Health.
