Higher Education in India • Gross enrolment ratio – Admission of Students from High School to College • 12.4 per hundred in India • 50 to 70 per hundred in US • Above 70 in Scandinavian Countries • 99.54 lakh students in India • 8 lakhs B.E. / B. Tech admissions pa • 40,000 M.E. / M. Tech admissions pa • 3 lakhs + MBA / PG Diploma admissions pa • 4.57 lakhs teachers • The numbers are bound to explode further in coming years, as GER in India increases from 12.4 to 30 by 2020. Our Strengths and Weaknesses • Strengths: • Highly inspired young minds in India’s Tech Education. • Impressive education infrastructure in great many institutions. • Qualified faculty in diversified areas. • Strong Government support and policy initiatives. • Strong private participation and industry interaction. • Weaknesses: • Shortage of qualified faculty in many institutions. • Lack of research and innovation environment. • Limited use of technology in education delivery. • Lack of global perspective. • Expansion without quality assurance. Technology Integration for Better Outreach and Quality Improvement • Technology integration for e-governance of institutions and tech universities. • Knowledge based curriculum design. • Improving teaching effectiveness by technology integration – hybrid of e-learning and classroom teaching and other learning models. • Open source content development and delivery through internet – world class universities such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford and IITs in India have already implemented this initiative. • Connected smart classrooms for enhanced outreach and quality delivery – EDUSAT classrooms in tech universities in India to share quality faculty.
