  1. The King’s Great Matter • Connect – Examine the speech made by Henry VIII and answer questions a, b and c.

  2. Learning Outcomes Content: You will investigate ‘The King’s Great Matter’ – what, who, when, where, why and how. Process – You will examine a range of evidence to then produce a 12 mark practice answer. Benefit – By now you should be easily able to create a 12 mark answer, this lesson will be able to assess your ability to do this.

  3. The Divorce • Henry VIII had married Catherine of Aragon. A Spanish princess in 1509 at the age of 18, shortly after his accession. By 1527, Henry VIII wished to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. • WHY?

  4. Henry fell in love with Anne Boleyn Henry thought that he was being punished by God Henry said that Pope Julius did not have the right to give him permission to marry Catherine Henry needed a son to be his heir Anne was a witch who cast a spell to make Henry fall in love. Catherine was too old to have any children Henry had a daughter, Mary Henry wanted to challenge the authority of the Pope Anne refused to be Henry’s mistress; she wanted to be queen The bible says that a man should not marry his dead brother’s wife

Reasons for Divorce • Discuss the reasons on the sheet (previous slide) and Lee page 133 • Look at the timeline of the Deteriorating relationship of Henry and Catherine and complete the activities and the top of page 106. • – identify categories, short term, long term causes, links between reasons.

  6. Summary – Steps to divorce • Annulment expected • Case – Pope Julius II granted a Papal Dispensation for marriage – questions papal authority • 1527 – Sack of Rome • Spread of Protestantism • 1528-29 – Cardinal Campeggio – suggested nunnery • 1529 – court at Blackfriars – Pope withdrew authority and revoked case to Rome

  7. Key question: • Explain why was Wolsey unable to obtain the annulment that Henry desired. Or • Explain why Henry VIII wanted to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. • 12 marks = 12 minute challenge

  8. Review – Pair Share • What was the most important reason why Henry VIII wanted his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled? • What was the most important reason why Wolsey was unable to obtain this annulment?
