Motivation • By and large, the people who settled in the New England Colonies wanted to keep their family unit together and practice their own religion. • The people who founded the Middle Colonies were looking to practice their own religion (Pennsylvania mainly) or to make money. • The founders of the Southern Colonies were, for the most part, out to make money but also for religious practices.

Religion • The New England colonists were largely Puritans, who led very strict lives. • The Middle colonistswere a mixture of religions, including Quakers (led by William Penn), Catholics, Lutherans, Jews, and others. • The Southern colonists had a mixture of religions as well, including Baptists and Anglicans

Beliefs • The Pilgrims in Massachusetts and the Quakers in Pennsylvania were examples of people who had left England so they could practice the religion they chose. • These American colonists also believed that they had a right to govern themselves. More and more, they believed that they shouldn't have to pay so much in taxes to England, especially since they couldn't serve in the English government and have a say on how high or low those taxes were.
Education • The New England Colonists taught children to read. Only Boys were allowed to go to grammar school and college. • Middle Colonists had private schools based on their religion. Girls were not allowed to attend unless they were Quakers. • Southern Colonists were taught at home by private tutors. When they became teenagers, they went to college or sent to Europe. Girls were not allowed to go to school.

Farming • New England Colonists contributed fish. • Middle Colonists grew wheat, barley, oats, rye, and corn. • Southern Colonies grew several things. The most popular crop was tobacco. The two southernmost states (South Carolina and Georgia) also grew indigo and rice.

Food • There were not supermarkets like we have today. • People who lived on the Atlantic coast often caught fish and whales. • They might have apple trees and rows of corn and wheat. They might turn that corn into cornbread or cornmeal mush. They might turn that wheat into flour themselves and use it to bake bread. They might also hunt wild animals, like deer, rabbits, and turkeys.
