  1. Election from the Word of Jesus Christ • Luke 4:16-22

  2. Luke 4 • “16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

  3. Luke 4 • 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,    because he has anointed me    to proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives    and recovering of sight to the blind,    to set at liberty those who are oppressed,19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

  4. Luke 4 • 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled atthe gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph's son?”

  5. “When I was coming to Christ, I thought I was doing it all myself, and though I sought the Lord earnestly, I had no idea the Lord was seeking me. I do not think the young convert is at first aware of this.

  6. I can recall the very day and hour when first I received those truths [the doctrine of election] in my own soul- when they were, as John Bunyan says, burnt into my heart as with a hot iron, and I can recollect how I felt that I had grown on a sudden from a babe into a man- that I had made progress in Scriptural knowledge, through having found, once for all, that clue to the truth of God.

  7. One week-night, when I was sitting in the house of God, I was not thinking much about the preacher’s sermon, for I did not believe it.

  8. The thought struck me, How did you come to be a Christian? I sought the Lord. But how did you come to seek the Lord? The truth flashed across my mind in a moment- I should not have sought Him unless there had been some previous influence in my mind to make me seek Him. I prayed, thought I, but then I asked myself, How came I to pray? I was induced to pray by reading the Scriptures. How came I to read the Scriptures? I did read them, but what lead me to do so?

  9. Then, in a moment, I saw that God was at the bottom of it all, and that He was the author of my faith, and so the whole doctrine of grace opened up to me, and from that doctrine I have not departed to this day, and I desire to make this my constant confession, “ I ascribe my change wholly to God.”

  10. Ephesians 4:11-12 • “ And he Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”

  11. Is the doctrine of election really true? • Was it really supported by the Bible? • Did God really do some choosing?

  12. I. Even Jesus Christ recognizes and acknowledges the scriptures being our first and ultimate source of truth.

  14. 2 Timothy 3:16 • All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,”

  15. II. Jesus came to this world with a specific people in mind.

  17. Isaiah 61:2 • to proclaim the good news TO THE POOR • to proclaim liberty TO THE CAPTIVES • to recover the sight OF THE BLIND • to bring freedom TO THOSE WHO ARE • to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor OPPRESSED

  18. Luke 4: 28-30 • 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.”

  19. Acts 20:27 • For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

  20. Challenge • Give time and serious devotion as we delve into the discussion of this doctrine for this will not just give us knowledge but help us in our outlook in how we proclaim ourselves as Christians to this unbelieving and continually degrading world.
