Background The Mapping Module was added to the IDS to help analyze data spatially. The mapping module allows you to: • Most IDS reports can be mapped if data is grouped by zip code or county code • Select the specific data that you want to map • Zoom in to display only the geography of interest • Add labels, roads, hospitals, and ambulatory surgery centers • Change map colors • Change the title of the map • Modify the number of breaks and customize the break values • Print the map • Save the map as a bitmap file • Map non-IDS data using the Map Data Wizard
Mapping Basics • Producing a map is simple with the Mapping Module in the IDS. • The first step is to choose the report to map (ex. Market Share One Time Period, Trends, Etc) • Choose the time period(s). Note: When reporting on more than one period, the map wizard will ask which period to show in the map. Choose patient type • On Tab 2, select the field to report on. For a map, this should be reporting on a geographic field. Multi-level reports cannot be mapped. (This includes 2D reports) • On Tab 3, select the filter statement. For a map it is advisable to filter on a geographic area, like county or zip.
Mapping Basics On Tab 4 it is advisable to run the report to screen before running the map, just to make sure the filter statement is correct. After previewing, select the Map radio button. Run the report as usual by clicking on Run an Individual Report. Then when the prompt comes up choose the value to map. In this example, the Hospital Discharges will be mapped.
Mapping Basics It will take a few moments to produce the map. The following screen appears while the map is loading. The default map, which is divided into quintiles, draws all zip codes in Michigan. Note that only the zip codes that were included in the filter statement are shaded and the remaining zip codes appear white. *Demo Data
Map Tools The map tools are located at the bottom of the screen beneath the map. Pan tool allows users to position the map on the screen. To move the map, click on the icon and then click on the map and move the map in any direction. Note: The same effect can be achieved by moving the scroll bars on the bottom and right side of the map. Zoom In tool allows users to view only a small part of the map. To magnify an area, click on the icon and draw a box around the desired area. Zoom Out allows users to zoom out to twice the area that it was previously. To adjust the map, click on the Zoom Out icon and click anywhere on the map.
Map Tools Globe tool expands the map back to the entire state. Click on the globe icon and the map will redraw. Labeler tool allows users to label individual data elements on a map. Information tool displays information about the selected feature. Click on the icon and then click on the desired object on the map. Save tool allows users to save the map as a bitmap file. Print tool prints the map as it appears on the screen. Exit tool closes out of Map My Data and returns to the IDS report screen.
Map View The screen default when first creating a map using the new mapping module will be the entire state. Using the Zoom In icon, the map can be enlarged to focus on the area of interest. Once an area has been selected, it will be the default view for the map. This is the view that will appear when creating a map and will continue to be the default view until it is changed. *Demo Data
Mapping Layers • The Mapping Module allows the addition of: • Labels • Boundaries • Highways • Hospitals • licensed ambulatory surgery sites • Before a label can be added, the layer to be labeled must be made active. • Different features can be applied to the maps created in the Mapping Module.
Mapping Layers For example, to add county boundaries to the map, first click on "County" under the Active Layer and then click the box next to Visible. The county boundaries will appear on the map. To change the color and width of the county boundary, select the color palette box or change the width value. *Demo Data
Mapping Layers To add hospitals to the map, click on "Hospital" under the Active Layer and then click the box next to Visible. The color of the hospital symbol can be changed by clicking on the color palette box next to Visible and selecting a different color. The shape of the hospital symbol can also be changed by clicking on the drop down menu where Square is displayed. *Demo Data
Mapping Labels Map elements can be labeled by using the tools in the label section. To label the data elements, first verify that the correct element is selected under the Active Layer. Each zip code, hospital and county can be labeled individually or all at once. This is done by selecting the label element under the Label section.
Mapping Labels Report values have been added to the map using the label tool. • When labeling a data element, users have the choice of labeling the element name, element value, or report value. • For example, when labeling the zip code 48933, the element value would be 48933, Lansing would be the element name, and the report value would be the value for that zip code (based on the report). • To label each element separately, first click on the labeler icon and then left-click on the element (i.e. zip code) individually and each one will be labeled. *Demo Data
Mapping Labels To label all the elements at once, click the Add All button. This will label all the desired elements on the entire map. This function can also remove all of the labels at once using the Remove All button. This can be used regardless of whether the labels were added individually or all at once. To change the size of the label, you can move the Size Bar in the label section until the label is the size you prefer. Note: Each time the Size Bar is moved, either re-click each individual element or click Add All to have the change take effect.
Mapping Labels Alternatively, the font of the labels can be changed by clicking on the Font button. The color of the labels can also be changed by clicking on the color palette box next to the label and selecting a new color. All zip codes have been added to the map. *Demo Data
Adjusting Labels • In addition to changing the font size and color, users can also rotate the labels. • When labeling the data elements some labels may overlap. • In the labeling section, labels can be aligned vertically (top, bottom, and center) • Or horizontally (left, right, and center) to fix this situation.
Adjusting Labels – cont. Zip codes have been inserted with a rotation and vertically aligned to the bottom. To rotate the labels, select the degree of rotation desired and then select the individual element to label or click Add All. This is helpful when labeling small or odd shaped elements. *Demo Data
Data Elements For certain data elements the shape or line style can be changed on the map. For Hospitals and AmbHosps, the shapes represented can be changed. For Highways, line width, line type (i.e. solid, dash, dot, etc.), and color can be changed. For County, the width of the line and color can be changed. Highways are changed to yellow and thickened to be seen better *Demo Data
Map Colors The Mapping Module has default colors for each map. The colors can easily be changed by going to the legend and clicking on the box next to the color to be changed. The color palette box will appear. Select a new color and then click OK. Note: that each color needs to be changed individually. Once changed, the new map colors will become the default map colors.
Map and Legend Titles Both the map title and legend title in the Mapping Module are directly linked to the IDS report. In this example, the title of the map is Map Testing, since the map was created from a custom report. The map also defaults to quintiles and sets the break points automatically. The map title, legend, and break fields can be changed by clicking on the Setup button. After clicking on the Setup button, the following screen will appear.
Map and Legend Titles To change the Map Title or the Legend Title, type the new information on the appropriate line and click Close. The fonts for both the Map Title and Legend Title can be changed by selecting the Font button. Note: When using a map in a PowerPoint presentation, it is useful to leave the map title blank and add the map title directly on the slide.
Legend Breaks • To change the number of Legend Breaks, select the appropriate number from 1 to 8. • Users can also change the position of the legend to the following: • Left bottom • Left top • Right bottom • Right top.
Legend Breaks The Custom Values button allows users to define the values for each break field. When the Custom Values button is selected, a dialogue box will appear. To change a value, type the new value in the appropriate box. If a number is typed in the To box, the program will automatically adjust the number in the next From box. Click on the Accept button to make the desired changes.
Printing the Map Once the map is edited, print the map by choosing the Print button located at the bottom of the screen. Note that the map printed will be a screen shot of the map just as it appears on the computer screen.
Saving the Map The map can be saved by choosing the Save icon located at the bottom of the screen. The map will be saved as a bitmap file (.bmp). When the map is saved in a bitmap format, it can be imported into PowerPoint, Word, or other software. Below is an example of a map saved as a bitmap and imported into PowerPoint. *Demo Data
Resizing the Map It is recommended to use a program such as MSPAINT or another image editing software to convert the file to a JPEG (.jpg). JPEG files are much smaller in size and retain the quality. This will make PowerPoints much easier to send via email.
Default Map Settings – View and Legend When changes have been made to the formatting of a map, certain elements will become the default settings for future maps. The last geographic area that is viewed in the Mapping Module will become the default area for future maps. Alignment (Legend): When the alignment is changed in the legend, future maps will have the new alignment. Font: When the legend font is changed, the new font will become the default in the next map. Thematic Colors and Fills: When the thematic colors and fills are changed in the legend, they become the default for all future maps.
Default Map Settings - Labels Alignment (Label): When the alignment for a label is changed, the alignment that was last used will become the default for that label in future maps. Font: When the label font is changed for a specific element, the new font will become the default for that element. Line Width: When a line width is adjusted, it becomes the default for that line type.
