  2. Background Activities ESA projects for transcription HDDT ---> Optical disk Archiving of X-ray film ---> Optical disk for hospitals Development of Ingest and Catalogue Systems for EO Ground Stations Goal: Provide archiving solutions to new and current receiving stations Current MEOS archiving solution for Ground Stations

  3. WEB Catalogue Tape Utility Auto Archive DB DB DIS L0/Screening L2 processing L1 processors Reconstr . FEP Current Archiving Solution Subsystems of MEOS: Auto Archive, Tape Utility GUI GUI Agency IF remote Control SCS Local Control GUI Demod/BS Disk based Rolling Archive (temporary)

  4. Key Features • Manual and automatic operation • GUI for manual operation • SCS controlled automatic operations • Optional database for metadata • Self contained tape format • Single tape drives and jukeboxes (tape stacker) • Supported by MEOS WEB catalogue • (automatic updating of MEOS catalogue or other catalogue) • Support rawdata, products and auxiliary, user configurable • Future support of CEOS ICF

  5. Typical User Configurations SCS + FEP + Auto Archive : HDDT --> DLT transcription facility Existing MEOS GS + Tape Utility : Manual archiving and retrieval of selected data and/or products Add MEOS WEB catalogue for WEB inventory access to archived data and products

  6. GUI examples (1) Tape Utility for manual operations

  7. GUI examples (2) Locate tool: Used for finding tapes containing data for specified satellite and orbit Jukebox tool: Used for inspecting and moving tapes in the jukebox

  8. Tape Format * Self-contained tape format: The tape format ensures that all information necessary to retrieve a given pass is contained on the media itself. Tape format: "Header - Data - CTOC - Data- CTOC ... Data - CTOC" * Human readable header and inventory files: All entries in the header and the CTOC (Commulative Table of Contents) files are on the form <item>=<value> * Compatibility: The data file(s) are written using the standard Unix tar format. This implies that a given media will consist of a set of ASCII files and tar files, thus enabling for retrieval both using a MEOS system and standard Unix utilities, e.g. dd, tar. * Consistency: The media will always be consistent up to the last CTOC file. The CTOC files contain the entire inventory of all the data previously written on the tape. This implies that if a media write error occurs after data has been successfully archived onto the media, the media will be consistent up to the previous pass (i.e. only the last pass may be partially unaccessible).
