Why are we going there? • Objectives: • Students will learn about local historical sites Students will learn about state historical sites • Students will learn about national historical sites • Students will gain an appreciation for the study of historical places • Students will gain an understanding of historical happenings when they can make connections with the places around them and events throughout history

First, let’s learn about the places we are going! THIS WAY!

Dayton Miamisburg Mound • Created by the Adena Culture • Largest conical shaped earthwork of its kind in the state • The Adena Indians were the first in Ohio to build burial mounds

Dayton Wright B Flyer • Built to honor the accomplishments of Orville and Wilbur Wright who flew the original Wright B Flyer • Original flyer was built to help with pilot trainings and reconnaissance for the US Army • The remake of the Wright B Flyer is located in Miamisburg, Ohio

Dayton Carillon Historical Park • Created so people could learn about the achievements of people who lived in Dayton, Ohio • Has old fashioned inventions, including the NCR cash register • Has old fashioned forms of transportation such as old cars, trains, and buses • Deeds Carillon is a large landmark with 57 bells!

Dayton Collin's School • One room school house • Allows students to experience what life was like in the 1880s • Considered a historical landmark in Xenia

Dayton United States Air Force Museum • The world's largest military aviation museum • Displays over three hundred aircrafts and missiles

Ohio Fort Recovery • Two large battles took place there • Was the battle at Fort Recovery that led to the signing of a treaty which allowed settlers to live in the Northwest region

Ohio Ohio Village • Created to show what a typical town was like during the Civil War • During this time in history, Abraham Lincoln was president and there was a large battle between the North and the South to end slavery

Ohio Ohio Statehouse • Interprets the state capital’s history • Helps students learn about Ohio history, citizenship, and government • One of the oldest working statehouses in the U.S. • Has magnificent Greek architecture

Ohio Grant Birthplace • Restored cottage where Ulysses S. Grant was born • Ulysses S. Grant was born in Ohio and the 18th president of the U.S. • The cottage contains items from Grant’s time period in the 1800’s

Ohio Harding Tomb • Circular monument containing the remains of Warren B. Harding • Warren G. Harding was born in Ohio and the 29th president of the U.S. • Similar to the appearance of a round Greek temple

United States Statue of Liberty • A colossal statue given to the U.S. by France • It’s one of the most recognizable statues in the U.S. • Was designed by the same engineers as the Eiffle Tower • It stands at Liberty Island, located in the Hudson River of New York • Displays the joining of Nations between the U.S. and France

United States Mount Rushmore • Is a monumental granite sculpture • Represents the first 150 years of history in the U.S. • There are four heads sculpted into the monument: George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln • Mt. Rushmore is located near Keystone, South Dakota

United States The US Capitol Building • Used by Congress and serves as a museum of art and history to the American public • The U.S. Capitol is one of the most symbolic buildings in the U.S. • The building has the most impressive architecture in the U.S. • The building is located on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

United States Pony Express • First form of mail delivery in the U.S. • Pony express riders carried mail on horse back over 2000 miles to California! • The stables are still standing and located in St. Joseph, Missouri

United States USS Arizona National Memorial • The remains of a battleship, the USS Arizona commemorates all of those who lost their lives in the battle on December 7, 1941 • Located in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor where World War II began

How are we going to get there? • Activities: • News Reporters • Field Trip Teachers • Center Travelers • Clue Finders • Travel Agents

Activities (cont.) • News Reporters • Students will discuss non-fiction stories and historical places • In small groups, students will choose a historical place and research • Groups will video record a news broadcast displaying learned information about their place

Activities (cont.) • Field Trip Teachers • Students will venture on a field trip to a local or state historical place • Students will record learned facts in a history log • After field trip, students will teach another class about their place and what they experienced when they traveled there

Activities (cont.) • Center Travelers • Teacher will set up 5 travel centers in the room that will display pictures, information, and artifacts specific to the place • Students will travel to each center answering questions and then be given a stamp for their passport

Activities (cont.) • Clue Finders • Teacher will read the book: Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown • Students will work together to create multiple paper “Flat Stanleys” • The different “Flat Stanleys” will be sent to the historical places being studied. These places will then send information back allowing the students to find clues about the place

Activities (cont.) • Travel Agents • After studying different historical places, students will work in groups to create a travel brochure of an assigned place • Student’s job is to make other people want to travel to their place
