Our World By Hannah Emma Leah Calisha
MDG'S • In 2000…Ireland and.. 189 countries in the UN agreed to 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). They are trying to achieve these goals by 2015.
Our World Your mission…should you choose to accept it.. Is to join with us to help in the fight against… • Climate Change • Hunger & Poverty
How? ...together, we can do anything...
This year...This week...Today... We are working on… • MDG 1 – Eradicate Hunger and Poverty • MDG 7 – Environmental Sustainability
Poverty • About 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. This is one person every three and a half seconds, Unfortunately, it is children who die most often. • Yet there is plenty of food in the world for everyone. The problem is that hungry people are trapped in severe poverty. They lack the money to buy enough food to nourish themselves.
Organisations • There are a lot of organisations to help the poor people all over the world. • These organisations include: Concern, Oxfam, Trócaire, Irish Aid, Unicef, Eco, Bóthair, UN, Chernobyl Children and Barnardos.
Pollution • Air pollution • On our planet, Air is one of the most important natural resources on which all life depends.
Pollution • Water pollution • Oceans are polluted by oil on a daily basis from oil spills, routine shipping, run-offs and dumping. • Domestic households, industrial and agricultural practices produce wastewater that can cause pollution of many lakes and rivers. • THERE ARE MANY MORE CAUSES AND YOU CAN HELP US TO STOP THEM!!!!!
Did you know..? • Pollution causes Climate Change… • Climate Change causes Drought and Famine… • Drought and Famine cause Hunger and Poverty… • So….
What can we do? Lots! Look at this… • Are we Recycling? • Do we have a wormery? • Do we have a WOW day? • Do we conserve water? • Do we conserve energy?...
What we do...continued... • Do we collect money to send to children in need? • Do we have litter picker duties • Do we learn a lot about the importance of looking after our environment? • Do we tell our family and friends about the importance of looking after our environment……?
All of these efforts... • Are helping in the battle against Climate Change • Are helping to save and protect our environment • Are teaching others that we know it is very important to care for our environment • And by caring for our environment, we are helping to create balance all over Planet Earth.
What more can we do? • Walk to school when you can • Carpool when you can • Donate our used toys to the Jumble Sale • Help win the Tidy Towns Competition by cleaning up our own area. • Buy ‘Fairtrade’ products • Plant a Tree • Tell others!
Why plant a tree? • Our trees are our future • We need trees for a healthy environment • We need trees for oxygen BUT… • We need our native ‘deciduous’ trees for a healthy habitat for all animals and plants…
Biodiversity • Biodiversity is the variety of species that live in a certain area and the natural communities in which they occur.
Why is biodiversity important? • Species and ecosystems provide essential goods and services upon which human well-being depends. They support our health, our environment and our economies.
Species Loss • Scientists estimate that species extinctions are occurring 100 to 1000 times faster than without human influence. Without a change in our actions half of the world's species may be lost by 2100. • This would be DISASTROUS! • In the USA alone, nearly 4,500 known species are threatened with extinction, including…
Species Loss • Whooping Crane, Karner Blue Butterfly, Manatee, Dusky Seaside Sparrowand the Black Footed Ferret.
Now is the Time! • Not Tomorrow… • Not Next Week… • Or Next Month… • Today… • Make the choice to Save Our Planet • Then….Do something about it!
Thank you for joining us!
