Check Point How many kingdoms are known today? What do you call a scientist who studies the behavior and characteristics of living things?
What is cell type? Prokaryotic- describes an organism with cells that do not have a nucleus Eukaryotic- describes an organism with cells that do have a nucleus
Archaebacteria • One celled • No separate nucleus • Example: bacteria
Eubacteria • True bacteria • Unicellular and prokaryotic • Some can live inside of you • Examples: E. coli, stapylococcus
Protist • Single-celled or multicellular • Have nucleus and other cell structures • Examples: algae (plant-like), amoeba, protozoa (animal-like)
Check Point What are the two types of Protists? How are the two types of Protists different?
Fungus • Single-celled and Many-celled • Has cell walls • Has no chlorophyll • Cannot move • Absorb nutrients from other organisms • Examples: mushrooms, yeast, molds
Plant • Many-celled • Has cell walls • Use energy from the sun and chlorophyll to make sugars • Examples: trees, flowers, ferns
Animal • Many-celled • Has no chlorophyll • Cannot make its own food • Get energy by consuming other organisms • Examples: invertebrates, fish, birds, mammals
Check Point • What is the main difference between a plant and an animal? • Chlorophyll • Animals cannot make their own food. • Animal cells lack a cell wall.
