  12. Governance and Administration Programmes of the Academy Science Advisory Programme Secretariat Liaison Activities Scholarly Publishing Programme

  13. Programme 1: Governance and Administration • Central to efficient functioning of the Academy, providing essential, cross-cutting administrative & financial support to Council & secretariat • Responsible for all reporting requirements & compliance

Sub-programme: Governance Promote good governance through ASSAf Council - Smooth transition from old to new Council - Induct new Council members - Oversee & drive changes to ASSAf Act • Sub-programme: Finance and Risk Ensure appropriate financial management systems - Implement risk management strategy - Ensure effective supply chain management - Attain unqualified audit

  15. Sub-programme: Human Resources Provision of HR management services - Implement induction programme for new staff - Address gaps in ASSAfpolicies & procedures - Ensure compliance with policies & procedures - Promote staff teambuilding

Scholarly Publishing Programme Strategic Objective 1: Increase visibility, accessibility & searchability of SA accredited scholarly journals • Seek funding for Scholarly Publishing Programme • Maintain the SciELO SA open access platform – no new titles • Prepare newly published issues of 65 journals • Introduce new version of SciELOSA platform, with enhanced statistics and discovery tools • Monitor and evaluate impact of platform • Provide support for long-term preservation (Portico) • Advocate for SciELO SA journal editors to use to ORCID ID • Provide service to editors & add DOIs to articles

Scholarly Publishing Programme Strategic Objective 2: Improve quality of SA scholarly journals, books & conference proceedings - Continue peer review of journals - Utilise webinar technology for seminars - 4 webinars in 2017/18 - Assist journal editors to comply with DOAJ criteria - Monitor & advise on implementation & impact of DHET Research Output Policy & publish report - Disseminate findings of study on journal publishing 2005-2014 - Establish impact of ASSAf’sactivities in scholarly publishing in South Africa

LiaisonProgramme: International Aim to establish, strengthen and sustain productive collaborations with African and overseas academies of science and like-minded organisations to enhance capacity in S&T Programme structure: • Strategic partnerships • IAP • TWAS and TWAS ROSSA • ICSU and ICSU ROA • Africa collaboration • Overseas collaboration

Liaison Programme: International Collaborate with & strengthen African & international science academies - Promote TWAS-ROSSA & related opportunities in region - Promote nomination of African scientists as TWAS fellows - Undertake joint activity with ICSU-ROA - Position ASSAfin BRICS science academies

Liaison Programme: International Collaborate with & strengthen African science academies • Leading role in implementation of NASAC Strategic Plan • Strengthen collaboration with SADC science academies • Strengthen links with Ugandan & Nigerian science academies • Explore links with Benin academy and strengthened ties with Francophone academies • Serve on NASAC executive board

Liaison Programme: International Collaborate with & strengthen links with international science academies - Finalise & implement overseas collaboration framework • Strengthen collaboration with Leopoldina • Seek funding for collaboration with Austrian Academy of Sciences • Lead in establishment of platform for BRICS academies • Mobilise overseas embassies for collaboration

Liaison Programme: Young Scientists Support SAYAS and increase participation of young scientists in science-related activities nationally and globally • Host Annual Young Scientists’ Conference • Assist SAYAS with fund raising drive • Implement young scientist activities – TWAS-ROSSA, Lindau Nobel Laureate programme

Liaison Programme: Gender & STI ASSAf hosts the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) National Chapter and GenderInSITE regional focal point • Seek funding for sustainability • Targeted drive to increase OWSD National Chapter members • Apply gender lens to ASSAf’sactivities

Science Advisory Programme • Facilitate scholarly engagement on key national and global challenges • Provide evidence-based science advice in support of policy development - Implement systems for record-keeping - Consolidate activities in line with priorities of the country, NDP - Promote scholarly debate on topics of national, regional & global importance • Engage with relevant stakeholders & policymakers • Improve dissemination & uptake of study reports • Monitor, evaluate & report on impact of study reports
