3” IZip Detector Testing • 3” IZip design is an active R&D project, with the mask design changing for each fab run • Test facilities at Berkeley (and Santa Clara?) are being used to characterize detector properties at surface, where neutron and cosmogenic backgrounds limit the ultimate sensitivity of the testing • Underground performance will be measured in-situ while SuperCDMS-Sudan is taking data • In effect, we are planning to use prototype detectors for the next round of CDMS physics running Richard Partridge
4” IZip Detector Testing • SuperCDMS SNOLab will use ~100 kg of 4” IZip detectors • Probably should expect further iteration of IZip design, as well as learning curve for 4” fabrication • Goal should be to do prototype and pre-production detector testing in advance of the production run • Some testing can be done at surface facilities, but ultimately these tests will be background limited • Testing 4” detectors at Sudan is not an option • Test facility at SNOLab planned to allow low background testing of 4” detectors Richard Partridge
Recycle SUF Fridge • Detectors cooled by existing Oxford dilution refrigerator at Stanford • Last used for CDMS I • New “tails” that connect to bottom of fridge and provide cooling and support for detectors and cold hardware • Will recycle existing thermometry wires for temperature monitoring • Open issue: how to bring out detector cables • Up through fridge to top of fridge? • Down through 4K and outer vacuum flanges Richard Partridge
Refurbishments at SLAC / Stanford • Address “List of 47” safety issues found during SLAC safety walkthrough • Fabricate new tails in SLAC shops • Disconnect fridge from “Icebox” used for CDMS I and install new tails / thermometry • Bring fridge back into operation and perform thermal testing to make sure we achieve desire temperatures • Install new detector cabling if solution is ready in time • Prepare fridge for shipment Richard Partridge

Next Stop: Fermilab • Stanford tests will rely on dewars to provide cryogens with manual control of the fridge • Add He re-liquifier to create a closed He system • Add Nitrogen liquifier • Add control system to allow unattended operation • Install detector cabling if not completed at Stanford • Test fridge with new control system • Prepare fridge for shipment Richard Partridge
Last Stop: SNOLab • Bring fridge down into underground facility • Reassemble fridge • Install magnetic shield to outside of fridge • Install fridge in water shielding tank built by SNOLab • Bring fridge back into operation • Begin detector testing Richard Partridge
Test Facility Project Management • SLAC is helping Queens to develop a WBS for the test facility • Need to coordinate activities at SLAC/Stanford, Fermilab, Queens, and SNOLab • Make sure that all bases are covered • SLAC will continue to work with Queens in developing a schedule for the test facility • Current targets are to complete SLAC/Stanford work by the end of the year, deliver automated fridge to SNOLab by mid 2011 • SLAC is also working with Queens to develop a short “Requirements Document” that describes the motivation and requirements for the test facility • Secondary goal: Develop some experience / expertise within the Queens group in Project Management Richard Partridge
