What is an EPILOGUE? • A section or speech at the end of a book or play that serves as a comment on or a conclusion to what has happened. • Some epilogues may feature scenes only tangentially related to the subject of the story. • They can be used to hint at a sequel or wrap up all the loose ends. They can occur at a significant period of time after the main plot has ended. • It can continue in the same narrative style and perspective as the preceding story, although the form of an epilogue can occasionally be drastically different from the overall story. Brainstorm with a neighbor: Have you ever read or viewed an epilogue?

  3. Purpose of an Epilogue • The purpose of an epilogue is to add a little insight to some interesting developments that happen once the major plot is over. • Epilogues often act as a teaser trailer to any possible sequels that might be created later. • Sometimes the epilogue is used to add a little bit about the life/future of the main characters after the story itself has unfolded and wrapped up. Steps to take when writing an epilogue: • Skim back through the novel • Discuss and think about how the character(s) have changed throughout the novel and at its conclusion • Brainstorm and think about what the character would have gone on to do in the future. • A well-written epilogue takes into account how the character and behaved based on what the reader knows about the character.

  6. Your Writing Task • Your task is to write an epilogue for the novel, Inventing Elliot. • After Elliot raises his hand and makes that final knock, what do you believe happens next. Graham Gardener has left us with some clues, but it is up to you to write the final piece.

  7. Requirements • a minimum of 250 words. • It should be written in the same format style as Graham Gardner’s novel---descriptive language, dialogue, etc. • Tell the reader what has happened at Holminster High since that fateful day. ** Remember, you can write it as if it has happened in the same year or years ahead looking back.

  8. Questions and Due Date • Feel free to ask questions during class, study hall time, or DEAR to ask any questions regarding this assignment. • You will be completing a rough draft—including a peer edit and type the final draft with revisions. • You will have one week from the assigned date to complete this assignment.
