  7. All types: Year-long Semester Trimester Accelerated Variety of start dates Credits awarded are determined by the student’s home district What is the schedule?

  8. How do credits transfer? • Providing district awards grade • Intermediate District 287 • Reports completion to the state • Sends Report Card to home district • Sends Report Card to student • Home district grants credit

Can a district deny credit? • NO, by law the enrolling district must accept the credit… • IF, the student notifies the district 30 days before the course starts (unless waived by district); • BUT, the home district can reduce the student’s schedule; • AND, the home district may apply its criteria for accepting transfer credit to the online course.

  10. Who pays? • Public school students • State funded: replace regular day courses • Tuition: beyond a full load • Independent Study: at-risk students • Private/Home-schooled students • Must enroll full time for state funding • Tuition is charged otherwise

  11. Independent Study • Student must meet graduation incentives • Contact time must be provided • Local site • Int. Dist. 287 site • District 287 reports hours in MARSS as content is completed • Fully funded as ALC

  12. How does the funding flow? For regular public school enrollment: • 12% remains with home district • 2% to TIES for technical support • 10% to District 287 for management • 76% to district providing instruction • Only paid if course is completed

  13. How does the funding flow? For Independent Study: • IS program receives 100% of funding from membership hours reported • Reimbursement negotiated for contact time as needed

  14. What do students do? • Register online • Get signatures on enrollment forms from parents and counselors • Notify their home district 30 days before the class starts • Take a survey to determine their readiness • Ensure access to necessary technology

  15. What do parents do? • Read the enrollment information • Sign the enrollment form • Help the student complete the readiness survey • Support student efforts to access courses • Communicate with NSO regarding technical problems and credit transfer

  16. What does the home district do? • Award credit • Provide technical support if the student is using a district computer lab • Work out scheduling arrangements with students • Help provide special education accommodations for students with IEPs.

  17. Who handles technical issues? Three levels of support: • Level 1: Computer owner • Basic operation and connections • Level 2: Intermediate District 287 • Teacher and courseware support • Level 3: TIES • Servers and courseware

On the horizon • Contract option • Home district pays a lower fee to aid in supporting the student • Law proposals • Students may only take half of their courses online without approval or change of enrollment • Students may only start online courses up to the midpoint of a term without approval
