Online Shopping Statistics Office for National Statistics (ONC) – 16 December 2010 • Internet retail sales account for approximately 10.5% of all retail sales. • Average weekly internet retail sales in Nov 2010 totalled £660 million, compared with the average weekly value for all retailing of £6,300 million (excluding automotive fuel). • Between Nov 2009 and Nov 2010 the average weekly value for internet retail sales grew by 36.6%.   4. In this lesson students are learning about: • the advantages and disadvantages of shopping online rather than on the high street • features of online shopping sites • factors that contribute to a good online shopping experience

  5. At the end of this lesson students will be able to: • describe advantages and disadvantages of shopping online • describe features of online shopping sites • describe factors that contribute to a good ‘customer experience’ online

  6. Online versus high street • Look at Online Food Shopping.doc. Populate the table by deciding whether each of the points listed is an advantage or a disadvantage of shopping online for food.

  7. Task: • Work in pairs to draw up a similar table for another type of product, e.g. clothes, electrical goods, music, books.

  8. So… • Generally speaking some advantages and disadvantages of online shopping could be…. + convenience, choice, price, order scheduling and tracking - delivery problems, returns, time lag, security

  9. Which is best and why? • Justify your reasons…

  10. Brick versus click 10 mins • Look at Features of an Online Store.doc on • Identify equivalent features of online stores • features unique to online stores, e.g. customer ratings, personalised promotions, ‘other items you might like’, and so on.

  11. What makes for a good online ‘customer experience’? • What is a ‘Customer experience’? • work in groups to identify factors that make for a good customer experience online (4mins)

  12. What did you come up with? • attractive site • easy to navigate • good choice • detailed product information • Others!

  13. And finally • Homework…. • Fill in Online Stores.doc to compare the features of two different online shops
