Standards Based Authentic Assessment Judy LoBianco NASPE 2013 Channing Mann Physical Education Administrator of the Year Past-President, Eastern District-SHAPE America (formerly known as AAHPERD) Supervisor of Health, Physical Education and Nursing Services South Orange-Maplewood Schools New Jersey
A place where our teachers struggle most • A place where we need to provide meaningful, regular, relevant professional development • A place where we need to offer exemplars of best practice and research • A place where teachers need to break out of their comfort zone Assessment-What a Place!
Traditional Teacher Practice To grade only what the teacher “sees” in the gymnasium from bell to bell: *Are you here? (Attendance) *Are you on time? (Tardiness) *Are you dressed?(Preparation) *Are you doing something? (Participation) *Are you trying “hard”? (effort)
Shifting Assessment toward Student Growth *Provision of evidence-based assessment that provides proof of student learning and improvement *Ability to employ a variety of different mechanisms for the evidence: 1. Rubrics (PE METRICS) 2. Video-taped performance tasks (Ipad/Dartfish) 3. Transfer of skill in game-like situations (Yes, they’ve practiced, but what happens in the game?) 4. Use of pedometers, activity watches, HRMs, iPad apps
Use of Questioning/Discussion Techniques *What do you want students to know at the end of the lesson that they didn’t know in the beginning? How do you know they got there? *Framing questions so that the teacher knows that all students understand the tasks/concepts *Providing opportunities for students to express a level of understanding with each other, not just the teacher
